Racing Incident Report

Due to a misunderstanding, P Strydom was duly declared as the rider of both LAMBRO and KING OF HEARTS at the time of declaration. M Du Plessis was substituted as the rider of LAMBRO. LU YUE was withdrawn on 18.2.11 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter VITAL SMART (Apprentice K C Leung). Before being allowed to race again, LU YUE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. TAKNAM was slow to begin. VITAL SMART began awkwardly. FIONN’S DRAGON began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped REAL SUPREME. Shortly after the start, SHAHJEE raced tight between LIFE OF BEAUTY and KING OF HEARTS which shifted in. Also shortly after the start, WINNING EDGE was bumped by JUST FANTASTIC. For some distance passing the 250 Metres, REAL SUPREME was checked away from the heels of KING OF HEARTS when unable to obtain clear running to the outside of that horse and inside SHAHJEE. Then at the 200 Metres, REAL SUPREME was directed back to the inside of the heels of KING OF HEARTS, however, near the 150 Metre was steadied when KING OF HEARTS shifted in slightly. Over the concluding stages, REAL SUPREME again raced tight to the inside of KING OF HEARTS. Near the 200 Metres, LIFE OF BEAUTY was held up for clear running and shortly after this was shifted to the outside of TAVERNER. For some distance after this, LIFE OF BEAUTY raced in restricted room between TAVERNER and FIONN’S DRAGON and then close to the finishing line was checked when crowded for room between TAVERNER which shifted out slightly and FIONN’S DRAGON (H W Lai) which shifted in under pressure. H W Lai was advised to ensure that he makes every effort to keep his mounts on a straight course in similar circumstances in future. Because of this, LIFE OF BEAUTY was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. Near the 50 Metres, SHAHJEE was awkwardly placed inside the heels of JUST FANTASTIC. For the majority of the race, SPINNAKER travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, P Strydom stated that he had been instructed to ride KING OF HEARTS behind the leaders if possible. He said he took hold of KING OF HEARTS in the early stages with a view to obtaining a position behind SHAHJEE, however, when LIFE OF BEAUTY maintained its position on the back of that horse, he was left racing three wide in the early stages. He said when SHAHJEE improved its position to cross REAL SUPREME near the 1000 Metres, he allowed KING OF HEARTS to stride forward to race outside SHAHJEE rather than remain racing wide. He added that after reaching the lead SHAHJEE was steadied by its rider and as KING OF HEARTS was racing keenly, he elected to allow KING OF HEARTS to stride forward into the lead rather than restrain his horse as he felt the tempo of the race was only fair. He said the circumstances of today’s race resulted in KING OF HEARTS racing in a more forward position than had been intended. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that FIONN’S DRAGON had lost its right front plate. JUST FANTASTIC, TAVERNER and FIONN’S DRAGON were sent for sampling.
