Racing Incident Report

TURF MAGIC was slow to begin. From the outside barrier, ALWAYS WELL was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. Approaching the 1000 Metres, ALWAYS WELL became unbalanced when checked away from the heels of DREAM BUILDER. FREE AND EASY proved very difficult to settle in the early and middle stages. Approaching the 800 Metres, ALWAYS WELL, which was proving very difficult to settle, got its head on the side and shifted in away from NOBLE DANCER, resulting in DREAM BUILDER being checked when crowded for room. As the Stewards were of the view that there was no rider error involved in this incident but rather it was as a result of the manner in which ALWAYS WELL was racing, no further action was taken. After the 150 Metres, HAPPY YEAH YEAH got its head on the side and shifted out. Throughout the race, NOBLE DANCER travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight tailed out. The performance of NOBLE DANCER was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, NOBLE DANCER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in whilst they considered if ELUSIVE PRINCE had been afforded a fair start. Evidence was taken from Jockey D Whyte and Trainer J Size as well as Starter, Mr T McGovern. After taking evidence from all parties concerned and after viewing the videos, the Stewards found that prior to the start being effected ELUSIVE PRINCE, which was being assisted by a starting gate handler, became fractious and lunged at the front gates, resulting in the front gates opening marginally prior to the remaining gates. As the start was effected, the starting gate handler assisting ELUSIVE PRINCE turned that horse’s head to the left hand side in an attempt to have it come back from the front gates, resulting in ELUSIVE PRINCE being prevented from beginning with the field and losing a significant amount of ground. As the Stewards formed the view that the attempt by the starting gate handler to assist ELUSIVE PRINCE had retarded the horse’s ability to begin with the field, ELUSIVE PRINCE was declared a non-runner acting under the power of Rule 12(19). The Stewards ruled that before being allowed to race again, ELUSIVE PRINCE will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test due to having been fractious after being placed in the barriers. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that ALWAYS WELL had lost its left front plate and SUPER BROTHER had sustained a bleeding laceration wound to the outside of the right hind cannon. Before being allowed to race again, SUPER BROTHER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of ELUSIVE PRINCE after the race did not show any significant findings. ELUSIVE PRINCE, FLYING SMART and FREE AND EASY were sent for sampling.
