Racing Incident Report

SIMPLE ELEGANT shifted out at the start and bumped the hindquarters of MONICA. SIMPLE ELEGANT and MONICA were then crowded for room between LAKESHORE EAGLE which was taken out by MR ALDAN and BIG FORTUNE (K Teetan) which shifted in when being ridden along. K Teetan was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. In this incident, MR ALDAN became unbalanced after making contact with LAKESHORE EAGLE.
JOYFUL MOMENTS and FLYING SWORD bumped at the start. After this, both horses were shifted across behind runners from the outside barriers.
For some distance after the 1100 Metres, STAR OF YUEN LONG commenced to travel very keenly and near the 950 Metres was checked away from the heels of SIMPLE ELEGANT (G van Niekerk) which, after shifting in when not quite clear, then had to be ridden along to maintain its position. G van Niekerk was advised that whilst there were a number of circumstances to this incident, nonetheless he was not fully clear at the time that he commenced to cross STAR OF YUEN LONG and accordingly he was reprimanded and told to provide sufficient clearance when shifting ground. NOBLE STEED, which was following STAR OF YUEN LONG, was awkwardly placed behind that horse in consequence.
After the 1000 Metres, MR ALDAN was left racing wide and without cover.
Near the 950 Metres, FLYING SWORD was awkwardly placed inside the heels of MONICA which lay in away from the heels of LAKESHORE EAGLE.
After the 900 Metres, MERRYGOWIN got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of THRILLED. MONICA, which was following, was inconvenienced in consequence.
Near the 750 Metres, JOYFUL MOMENTS commenced to travel keenly and was shifted away from the heels of PICKEN.
Approaching the 700 Metres, NOBLE STEED got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of STAR OF YUEN LONG. LAKESHORE EAGLE, which was following, was hampered in consequence.
Approaching the 600 Metres, NOBLE STEED shifted out and brushed PICKEN.
Near the 550 Metres, JOYFUL MOMENTS raced tight outside LAKESHORE EAGLE which shifted out to improve.
THRILLED had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.
Passing the 300 Metres, BIG FORTUNE was steadied and shifted to the outside of HAPPY FORCE after attempting to obtain clear running inside that horse which was not available.
MONICA was unable to obtain clear running until near the 200 Metres and then after being shifted to the inside of NOBLE STEED was steadied and directed to the outside of that horse when unable to proceed between NOBLE STEED and MERRYGOWIN which was awkwardly placed outside the heels of MR ALDAN which shifted out marginally passing the 150 Metres.
After the 200 Metres, BIG FORTUNE raced tight inside SIMPLE ELEGANT which raced tight inside of STAR OF YUEN LONG.
When questioned regarding the poor performance of SIMPLE ELEGANT, G van Niekerk stated that after racing tight on jumping, he was able to obtain a forward position without having to make too much use of the horse. He said making the turn near the 900 Metres SIMPLE ELEGANT came off the bridle and he had to ride his mount along to ensure that it maintained its position outside HAPPY FORCE. He said after this SIMPLE ELEGANT travelled only fairly and after coming under pressure rounding the Home Turn was disappointing in the manner in which it failed to finish off the race in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of SIMPLE ELEGANT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious. The performance of SIMPLE ELEGANT, a winner of its two most recent starts, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SIMPLE ELEGANT will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
After the race, it was noted that THRILLED had blood present at the left nostril. An endoscopic examination of THRILLED confirmed that horse to have bled.
STAR OF YUEN LONG, NOBLE STEED and MONICA were sent for sampling.
