| Background: Ryusei Sakai won a fifth Group 1 this year in the Takamatsunomiya Kinen with Mad Cool, while last year he scored a famous overseas win aboard Bathrat Leon in Saudia Arabia’s 1351 Turf Sprint. Sakai reached 400 JRA wins on 23 December, 2023. He was born in Tokyo as the son of a jockey-turned-trainer at NAR’s Oi Racecourse, he graduated from the JRA Horse Racing School in 2016 and debuted that year, riding for Yoshito Yahagi. In 2017, he set out to gain experience in Australia for a year and rode 16 winners, during which he made his first Group 1 attempt in the 2018 Caulfield Cup, finishing 14th. Under the expertise and guidance of Yahagi, the young gun has been impressive riding in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, France, Great Britain, and Australia. |
