Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the barriers, the Veterinary Surgeon noted that HAIL WINNER had blood in its mouth. He said this was from a minor cut to the tip of the horse's tongue, but in his opinion it was suitable to race. Just as the gates opened, FORTUNE GLORY turned its head to the near side and momentarily had its head behind the partition. As a consequence, FORTUNE GLORY lost a lot of ground. BOTANY BAY jumped awkwardly with its head up and made contact with HAIL WINNER. Near the 800 Metres, GOLDCHIN BEST was ridden along to take up a position between CYBER GULCH and AQUA PRINCE which was racing just inside the heels of NANNING TREASURE. At about the 800 Metres, NANNING TREASURE shifted in slightly, causing crowding to the three runners on its inside which was extenuated by GOLDCHIN BEST improving into the position it took up. The main sufferer in the crowding was CYBER GULCH which lost the position from inside GOLDCHIN BEST. STORM BOY, which was following, was hampered in consequence. Because of all the circumstances involved, the Stewards were of the view no action could be taken. About the 500 Metres, NANNING TREASURE and YAN CHAI ELITE were checked when crowded for room between METRO TRAVELLER which shifted out from behind HAIL WINNER and FAT CHOY TOGETHER which was improving wide and shifted in slightly. In the circumstances, no action was taken. When NANNING TREASURE checked, BOTANY BAY, which was following, was checked rather severely in consequence and shifted in. Near the 400 Metres, STORM BOY steadied and shifted towards the inside of CYBER GULCH. W Woods (UNIVERSAL GLORY) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that at about the 300 Metres, he permitted his mount to shift out whilst riding it along and as a consequence of this GOLDCHIN BEST lost the running to which it was rightfully entitled between HAIL WINNER and UNIVERSAL GLORY and was checked. The Stewards deliberated on the matter, took full account of all the submissions put by W Woods and decided in this case that the appropriate penalty was for his licence to ride in races to be suspended for a period to expire on Sunday, 25 February 2001 on which day he may resume race riding. The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the meeting at Happy Valley next Wednesday, 14 February 2001. J Egan (AQUA PRINCE) explained the horse had a tendency to over-race in the early and middle stages, then on the Home Turn he was tight for racing room, but generally this was of little significance. He said in the run to the line AQUA PRINCE was in his opinion disappointing, then on pulling up made abnormal breathing noises. Before being permitted to race again, it will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and it will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. W Woods explained along the Back Straight he raced at least one horse off the running rail in accordance with instructions given to him. It is the intention of the Stewards to confirm this with Mr Y O Wong, Trainer of UNIVERSAL GLORY, at Happy Valley next Wednesday night. GOLDCHIN BEST was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
