Racing Incident Report

At the Happy Valley meeting on 18 April 2001 ORIENTAL TREASURE was withdrawn by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice. Today before Race 1 ORIENTAL TREASURE was again examined by the same Veterinary Surgeon who saw the horse at Happy Valley. He advised the Stewards that the off front leg of the horse which had been causing the concern had not changed in appearance since the Happy Valley meeting. The horse was not sore and he pointed out since the Happy Valley meeting ORIENTAL TREASURE had performed satisfactorily in an official barrier trial, passed an official veterinary examination subsequent to that trial and had passed the normal pre-race veterinary examination before today's meeting. In all the circumstances the Veterinary Surgeon advised the Stewards that in his opinion ORIENTAL TREASURE was today suitable to race. BRILLIANT LEADER left the gates awkwardly. Apprentice K C Tsang (PRODIGY) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding. The careless riding being that he allowed his mount to shift in turning out of the Straight the first time when not clear of WONDERFUL LIFE. As a consequence of this, that horse was carried across the running of KOWLOON'S BLESSING which was checked. After taking into account all the circumstances of this case and submissions put by Apprentice K C Tsang and Mr L Fownes, allocated Trainer of Apprentice Tsang, it was decided the appropriate penalty was for Apprentice Tsang to be suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday, 4 June 2001 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley meeting next Wednesday, 23 May 2001. About the 1000 Metres, ORIENTAL TREASURE shifted out from behind SUPER SPLENDID, this caused some inconvenience to CHEERS UP and obliged that horse to race wider. Approaching the 800 Metres, SUPER SPLENDID became unbalanced when on the heels of ZABETTE and shifted out. About the 300 Metres, WONDERFUL LIFE was disappointed for running between SUPER SPLENDID and ORIENTAL TREASURE which shifted in. After this WONDERFUL LIFE was shifted out to find running. In the run to the winning post, CHEERS UP shifted out, causing some inconvenience to ENORMOUS WAY. ZABETTE was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. After the race, it was noted that ZABETTE was making an abnormal breathing noise. The Veterinary Surgeon performed an endoscopic examination on ZABETTE which revealed a partial paralysis of the larynx. He said as a result of this ZABETTE will always be inclined to make a breathing noise. He went on to say a surgery may assist with the problem. An inquiry was opened into the running and riding of HIDDEN TALENT. After taking evidence from Mr J Moore, Trainer of the horse, and from E Saint-Martin, rider, the inquiry was adjourned until 11 am tomorrow at the Happy Valley Race Course.
