Racing Incident Report

When being loaded, HURRY UP became fractious, reared and threw itself down. Acting on veterinary advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of HURRY UP. Before HURRY UP can race again, it has to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. ALL PERFECT left the gates awkwardly, was then checked by WISHES which shifted in abruptly. When being checked, ALL PERFECT shifted in and carried WELL BEST onto the heels of UNIVERSAL STAR. About the 800 Metres, THE ONLY HERO was steadied when momentarily crowded by ANIMATED PLAYTHING. Approaching and rounding the Home Turn, ROYAL STAR hung out. About the 300 Metres, SHINING GEM (E Legrix) improved between EASY STAR and ANIMATED PLAYTHING which was today having its first race start. When improving to run where there was barely room, SHINING GEM made contact with ANIMATED PLAYTHING which became unbalanced, shifted out and as a consequence of this UNIVERSAL STAR was steadied and shifted out to avoid ANIMATED PLAYTHING. After considering all the circumstances involved in this matter, it was decided not to take any direct action, however, E Legrix was severely reprimanded and told he must exercise far more care when shifting ground and must ensure he always has racing room before improving. He was advised at the conclusion of the inquiry that the evidence he had submitted was far from satisfactory from a person of his experience and in future he will be expected to provide inquiries with evidence which is more straightforward than that which he presented today. After the 300 Metres, WELL BEST was steadied and shifted in when disappointed for running between ROYAL STAR and PERFECT MOMENT. On returning to scale, H K Yim (PERFECT VICTORY) and Mr D Cruz, trainer of the horse, sought permission to view the official video films of the concluding stages. They were of the view there might have been grounds to lodge an objection against FRENCH CONNECTION being declared 2nd. However, after viewing the available films, Trainer Cruz and Jockey Yim were of the view it would be inappropriate to object on this occasion. Accordingly the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. Apprentice M W Leung (EASY STAR) said today the trainer had pointed out to him from a difficult gate he should try and ride EASY STAR further forward than has been the practice in the past. He said he had been told from the draw the trainer insisted he try and find some cover with the horse. He said EASY STAR left the gates nicely, went forward without being pushed along and was able to take up a position although wide but with cover towards the front. The explanations submitted by Apprentice M W Leung were on this occasion accepted.
