Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the barrier, COMFORT was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and after the necessary consultation it was decided the horse was suitable to race. MELROSE STAR left the gates awkwardly and threw its head up. About the 1200 Metres, when being steadied to take up a position behind STAR OF TAI PO, PRINCESS BEAUTY became unbalanced and threw its head about. About the 1000 Metres, COMFORT was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of PRINCESS BEAUTY. About the 600 Metres, PROFIT TREASURE shifted out from behind GREAT EXPECTATION which was stopping. As a consequence of this, some inconvenience was caused to HAPPY LIFE and ARRECTIS AURIBUS, both of which were obliged to race wider. About the 500 Metres, MELROSE STAR and HAPPY LIFE came together as MELROSE STAR was being ridden along in an endeavour to go forward. For some distance after the 500 Metres, COMFORT was held up for running between BON BON and PRINCESS BEAUTY which was giving ground. Just on straightening, COMFORT was checked and shifted out abruptly. About the 300 Metres, the end portion of the whip being used by J Egan (BON BON) broke. W Woods (SIGHT FIRST) said the horse is temperamental in the gates and is usually not assisted by any handlers. He said today however there was no alternative as the horse after being boxed became restless and endeavoured to get under the front gates. To prevent this, an attendant had pulled the horse's head up, then just as the gates opened, SIGHT FIRST began to rear, as a consequence of this came out of the gates very awkwardly and lost considerable ground. Mr L Fownes, trainer of SIGHT FIRST, was advised should the horse continue to cause trouble at the gates, it may be necessary to take some action against it. PROFIT TREASURE was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
