Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, TAJASUR bounded in the air. On jumping, SPARKY shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of PLENTY-PLENTY. Just after the start, SOLID CONTACT shifted in and brushed KENWOOD MELODY. When questioned, K H Ting (SPARKY) said he had very few rides for the stable and he was anxious to ride the horse as he was directed. He said he was told before the race SPARKY possesses only a short sharp sprint and he must ensure in the run the horse was held up for such a sprint. He said on jumping SPARKY was inconvenienced when crowded between PLENTY-PLENTY and CHAMP DE UNION, as a consequence of this became unbalanced and he felt it was in the best interests of his mount to rebalance it before making any attempt to improve. He said but for the incident at the start he was sure he could have ridden SPARKY closer to the lead and still in accordance with the instructions he had been given. He went on to say when improving strongly over the concluding stages SPARKY was inconvenienced by CHAMP DE UNION which shifted out. Whilst accepting the explanations submitted by K H Ting, he was told there are times in races when it is expected of senior riders they display more initiative than he appeared to do today. J Egan (LUCKY WIN) said he had been riding the horse in its work of recent times, this work in his opinion whilst satisfactory had not been in any way outstanding. He said he was also of the opinion the trial that LUCKY WIN won at Sha Tin was again satisfactory, however, he did not think the horse would be able to do much better. He said today LUCKY WIN left the gates well, but after going only a very short distance he became concerned the horse would not be figuring in the finish. He said LUCKY WIN travelled in a forward position to about the 400 Metres, then when hit with the whip the horse lost its action. He said as he was concerned with the way LUCKY WIN was travelling, he eased the horse down. The performance of LUCKY WIN was considered by the Stewards to be unacceptable. Before the horse can race again, it has to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. LUCKY WIN was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing. The Veterinary Surgeon said after the race he conducted an endoscopic examination of the horse which showed a significant amount of blood in the windpipe.
