Racing Incident Report

Just as the gates opened, ASIA STAR reared and as a consequence the horse lost a lot of ground. CLASSIC CHOICE was slowly away, shifted out slightly and bumped the hindquarters of DYNAMIC WINNINGS. LEGEND OF VELOCITY left the gates awkwardly. Approaching and rounding the Home Turn, HAIL WINNER hung in. When questioned, Apprentice S K Sit (INVENTOR) said from a good gate he had been instructed to ride the horse somewhere about the second or third position if possible. He said INVENTOR jumped well, went forward, but when he went to steady the horse and take up a position behind the lead, it immediately commenced to hang out and proved very difficult for him to ride. He said when HAIL WINNER went across him near the 1200 Metres he was not able to hold the position behind that horse and because of INVENTOR continuing to hang out along the Back Straight, he lost more ground, finished up towards the rearward position, then to obtain running shifted out near the 400 Metres. In considering the circumstances of the ride, the Stewards were aware of poor recent form of INVENTOR and in the middle stages did look to be proving somewhat difficult for Apprentice S K Sit to manage. It was therefore decided not to proceed, however, Apprentice S K Sit was told his ride had caused a lot of concern and in slightly different circumstances it could easily have led to a breach of the rule which deals with horses being given every opportunity to obtain the best placing.
