Racing Incident Report

BUDDIES POWER jumped very awkwardly, threw its head about, shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of SPLENDID BO BO. Just after the start, SPLENDID BO BO and BUDDIES POWER were crowded for room between BUTTERFORD which shifted out slightly and JUST IN TIME which shifted in slightly. D Dunn (SPINNING CITY) said the horse left the gates somewhat awkwardly, he was reluctant to push along in the early stages as the horse was racing first up over 1400 Metres and in all the circumstances he finished up further back in the race than was the intention. He went on to say at about the 600 Metres SPINNING CITY was reluctant to hold its position inside BUDDIES POWER which was racing greenly and shifting ground. He said at this time SPINNING CITY got its head up and hung out across the heels of BUDDIES POWER. He said in the Straight he initially thought SPINNING CITY was going to run into the race, but the horse did not close off strongly as he thought it was going to. When asked about the disappointing performance of HIGHLIGHT, E Legrix said from a good draw he had been asked to put the horse in a forward position. He said HIGHLIGHT travelled well enough in the run, but on straightening when he became aware SUNNY was a long way in front, he put HIGHLIGHT under pressure to go forward, the horse did not respond, commenced to give ground and in the run to the winning post became badly unbalanced, then pulled up very quickly after the line and it seemed to him to be blowing hard. HIGHLIGHT and SPLENDID BO BO were sent for sampling and a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that when he examined HIGHLIGHT, he noted it had sustained a dynamic pharyngeal collapse (the wall at the back of the horse's throat collapsed as it attempted to breathe in). The Veterinary Officer said this condition was one of some significance. Before HIGHLIGHT can race again, it will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and must pass an official veterinary examination. WISE CHOICE and FORTUNE TYCOON were sent for sampling.
