Racing Incident Report

After being boxed, DEREK'S CHOICE became fractious and made contact with portions of its stall. DEREK'S CHOICE was released from the gates and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said the horse was suitable to race. PERFECT SHADOW was slowly away and made the first turn awkwardly when tight inside ROUND THE WORLD. R Fradd (LASER PRIDE) was fined $3,000 for using his whip in a manner which left marks on the off side of the horse. When asked about the improved performance of LASER PRIDE tonight when compared with its run at Sha Tin on 20 January 2002, R Fradd said he had given LASER PRIDE its final gallop before the Sha Tin run and he thought it had been working well. He said before that race he suggested to the trainer with the owners present that he was confident the horse would run well. R Fradd said in the Sha Tin race LASER PRIDE had enjoyed a good run and travelled satisfactorily, but shortly after straightening when under pressure commenced to give ground and was one of the first horses to be beaten and of course was very disappointing. He said he had only ridden LASER PRIDE once since that run and whilst it was easy work the horse had again felt well. He said tonight with the trainer out of town he had advised the connections he intended to ride LASER PRIDE along hard in the early stages and lead. He said however when INTERVENE went a good gallop on his inside, he elected to take a sit and travel back from that horse where he said LASER PRIDE travelled kindly and finished the race off strongly. He said he again gave the horse some chance of success tonight, but was not as confident as before the Sha Tin run and after being so disappointed that day was hesitant about recommending it strongly to the connections tonight. He said the manner in which the horse won did surprise him. It was noted the body weight of LASER PRIDE had gone up slightly since its last run. The explanations submitted were recorded.
