Racing Incident Report

Prior to being presented in the Parade Ring, FAVOURITE EXPRESS had its near side front plate refitted. UNIVERSAL STAR left the gates awkwardly and threw its head about. On jumping, STERLING COLOURS shifted in abruptly, this resulted in HAPPY HARVEST which had missed the start slightly being further inconvenienced. On jumping, PEARL AND GOLD and DYNAMIC WINNINGS came together. Just after the start, DYNAMIC WINNINGS was steadied to avoid the heels of FAVOURITE EXPRESS. Approaching and rounding the Home Turn, BUCK'S FIZZ hung in. As a consequence of this, some crowding was caused to PEARL AND GOLD. About the 400 Metres, HARMONY PRINCE was checked to avoid the heels of UNIVERSAL STAR. Also about the 400 Metres, ZINEDINE was checked to avoid STERLING COLOURS which was starting to give ground. When asked about the disappointing performance of STERLING COLOURS, W C Marwing said the horse today was racing over 1600 Metres for the first time and he was asked by the trainer to try and ride it with some cover if possible in an endeavour to ensure STERLING COLOURS got the trip. He said STERLING COLOURS left the gates well, he took hold of the horse in an endeavour to ride in accordance with instructions, but STERLING COLOURS proved very difficult for him to settle, over-raced, got its head up and several times became unbalanced when travelling close to the heels of FAVOURITE EXPRESS. He said he was able to settle STERLING COLOURS after about the 800 Metres, although racing a little tight inside PEARL AND GOLD, STERLING COLOURS travelled satisfactorily, but in the Straight when put under pressure did not respond, changed legs several times, dropped out and was very disappointing. He said as the horse was giving ground in the Straight, he did not persist with whip riding. He went on to say he had ridden STERLING COLOURS on the track recently when a tongue tie had been applied. He said this had been used in an endeavour to try and prevent the horse from pulling, but today in his opinion proved to be a little success. He said he was of the view that the disappointing performance could be attributed entirely to the manner in which the horse travelled in the early stages. After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon reported that he had conducted an endoscopic examination of the horse and this revealed a moderate amount of blood in the windpipe. The performance of STERLING COLOURS was considered to be unacceptable. Before it can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination and must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. STERLING COLOURS was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
