Racing Incident Report

RESOURCEFUL PRINCE was withdrawn on 18.2.02 on veterinary grounds (nail prick off side hind foot) and replaced by Standby Declared Starter GOLDEN SPIRIT. On leaving the Parade Ring, W M Lai was dislodged from ASCOT FANS. After being caught, ASCOT FANS was remounted and proceeded to the Start where the Veterinary Surgeon had the horse trotted up. He said he was not able to detect any abnormality and after the necessary consultations he said in his opinion ASCOT FANS was suitable to race. As this is the second time ASCOT FANS dislodged its rider on the way to the Start, the performance of the horse is of concern to the Stewards. Mr T K Ng, trainer of the horse, was told a similar performance could result in ASCOT FANS being suspended from racing for a period. MANY HAPPY RETURNS left the gates very awkwardly, just after the start was further inconvenienced when close to the heels of GOLDEN SPIRIT which on jumping shifted out. On jumping, GOOD MAN and FRAT RAT bumped. Near the winning post the first time, GOLDEN SPIRIT got its head up when racing close to the heels of VICTORY MOUNT. In the early stages, AUTHORISED was inclined to pull and near the winning post the first time threw its head about. Approaching and rounding the Home Turn, MANY HAPPY RETURNS hung in. About the 200 Metres, FRAT RAT was steadied when tightened between AUTHORISED and GOLDEN SPIRIT which shifted out. About 100 Metres out, ORLANDO FLYER and GOLDEN SPIRIT brushed. G Mossé (GOOD MAN) said the horse in its recent starts has had a tendency to hang out, tonight missed the start slightly, was not able to go forward and lead over the trip, near the winning post the first time commenced to hang out, got beyond his control and ran off. Accordingly he had to pull the horse up near the 1000 Metres. The performance of GOOD MAN was unacceptable. Before the horse will be allowed to race again, it must perform satisfactorily in a Happy Valley barrier trial over 1700 Metres. MANY HAPPY RETURNS and ARRECTIS AURIBUS were sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
