Racing Incident Report

WAH YAN FORTUNE was withdrawn on 21.9.02 on veterinary grounds (lame left fore) and replaced by Standby Declared Starter BOUNTIFUL (R Quinn). Before WAH YAN FORTUNE can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. After being boxed, HOWSON became fractious and reared. HOWSON was released from the gates, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and after the necessary consultations it was decided HOWSON was suitable to race. HOWSON came from the gates very awkwardly, then was unbalanced when close to the hindquarters of BLESSINGS' PARTNER. XLERATE left the gates very awkwardly and shifted in across the heels of DESERT STRIKE. Near the 800 Metres, CHERISHED was momentarily unbalanced when tight between STRAIGHT WIN and THE RICH MAN. Also near the 800 Metres, HOWSON and XLERATE bumped. In the early part of the Straight, WIEN and DESERT STRIKE raced tight. Then approaching the winning post, DESERT STRIKE, when weakening, was inclined to shift out. For some distance near the 300 Metres, DON CARLOS had trouble obtaining clear running between CHERISHED and THE RICH MAN. D Whyte (OCEAN ACROSS) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)]. The careless riding being that in the run to the winning post, he allowed his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of DON CARLOS. As a consequence of this, DON CARLOS lost the running to which it was rightfully entitled and near the winning post was checked. D Whyte was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 10 October 2002 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the meeting at Happy Valley next Wednesday night 25 September 2002. D Dunn (FOR YOUR EYES ONLY) explained even though the horse had drawn one, he had been instructed by the trainer to try and ensure it was comfortable in the run, therefore although FOR YOUR EYES ONLY left the gates well, he allowed BOUNTIFUL to cross him in the early stages. He said after this when other runners ran around that horse, he got shuffled back further than he would have wished. He said in hindsight it would have been in the best interests of FOR YOUR EYES ONLY to make some use of the good draw. He went on to say in the Straight when making some ground, he was steadied and shifted out abruptly to avoid firstly BOUNTIFUL and then shortly afterwards GOLDIE. The explanations put forward by D Dunn were accepted. After the race, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had returned showing signs of heat stress. STRAIGHT WIN was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, STRAIGHT WIN was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were detected. BLESSINGS' PARTNER and OCEAN ACROSS were sent for sampling.
