Racing Incident Report

When being steadied in the early stages, JOYFUL SPIRIT threw its head up. As a consequence of this, PRIME VAIN, which was following, became unbalanced and threw its head about. S Dye (PRIME VAIN) pointed out when looked at properly the run of the horse on 6 October 2002 was not disappointing when considering that race was over 1400 Metres, the horse was second up from a spell and had run in a similar fashion before. Today over 1600 Metres and at this stage of the horse's preparation he was strongly of the view it was much better suited than it was last start. D Whyte (JOYFUL SPIRIT) explained he was under strong instructions from Trainer I W Allan that he should do all he could to avoid leading, to ride the horse on the speed, find cover and hold it up in order to close strongly over about the last 300 Metres. He said he was aware the pace in the early and middle stages was moderate, but bearing in mind the instructions he had been given, he felt he had little alternative but to steady the horse away from the front as he did. The explanations submitted were accepted. G Schofield (SPRINTER) explained in the middle stages he thought his mount may have been galloped on behind. The post race clinical examination did not reveal any abnormalities. JOYFUL SPIRIT, PRIME VAIN and BLUE STITCH were sent for sampling. Subsequent to the race, EXPLOSIVE POWER and BLUE STITCH were examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 18 Oct 2002):
After racing last Wednesday night, SPRINTER was examined. No significant findings were detected. However, when examined yesterday, it was noted that the horse had heat in its right front tendon and showed signs of pain on deep palpation. Dr Stewart said this may indicate a minor strain or knock during the race. SPRINTER has been referred to the stable Veterinary Surgeon for further investigation.
On examination yesterday, it was noted that BLUE STITCH had bruising and minor abrasions to its right front leg.
Yesterday when examined it was noted EXPLOSIVE POWER had some bruising and multiple small abrasions to its right hind leg.
