Racing Incident Report

TRIPLE DRAGON was withdrawn on 18.10.02 on veterinary grounds (right fore tendonitis) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter CHINA WORLD (C Williams). Before TRIPLE DRAGON can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. SUPER COMBINATION left the gates awkwardly, then just after the start was unbalanced when being checked off the heels of HIGHLAND LEGEND. In this incident, F Coetzee was momentarily unbalanced in the saddle. It was established that UNIVERSAL PEGASUS had left the gates awkwardly, shifted out and bumped PRINCE GOLF which in turn shifted ground and made contact with STEP FORWARD. This horse then itself shifted out and bumped SUPER COMBINATION across the heels of HIGHLAND LEGEND. As a consequence of these factors, SUPER COMBINATION got well back and then in the early stages raced ungenerously and hung in throughout. Just after the start, HIGHLAND LEGEND was steadied to avoid AHEAD A HEAD (S Dye) which shifted in when only just clear. S Dye was told he should exercise far more care than this when shifting ground. Near the 500 Metres, KALIMANTAN was steadied and shifted out to improve around THUNDER MAN, then about 100 Metres out when closing strongly was shifted out into the clear. As a consequence of this, some inconvenience was caused to STEP FORWARD which was hanging out. R Quinn (THUNDER MAN) said the horse left the gates very awkwardly, shifted out and he bumped the outside of the starting stall with his knee and foot. Because of the incident at the start, the horse got further back than had been the plan. He said THUNDER MAN at no stage travelled as he thought it should, he had to ride along much more than he expected to try and maintain a position and only for a short time near the Home Turn did THUNDER MAN get properly "on the bit". He said in the run to the line, THUNDER MAN did not sprint as it had done at its last start and today was quite one paced. After the race, R Quinn was examined by the Club's doctor who said in his opinion he was fit and able to continue with his further engagements. When questioned, K H Ting (PERFECT SCORE) explained he had been instructed by the trainer to endeavour to ride the horse in a similar manner to its last run when the horse had been successful, that was to be towards the front, somewhere about 2nd or 3rd, try and make sure the horse settled and ride it out hard in the Straight. He said when the gates opened, PERFECT SCORE bounded in the air and because of this lost ground. In an endeavour to carry out the instructions he had been given, he rode along. However, PERFECT SCORE did not respond to his riding as he thought it would, was unable to get to a forward position, in the Straight dropped out and was in his opinion overall very disappointing. PERFECT SCORE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, PERFECT SCORE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. The performance of PERFECT SCORE, a last start winner, was considered by the Stewards to be unacceptable. Before the horse can race again, it will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and must pass an official veterinary examination. THUNDER MAN, HIGHLAND LEGEND and PRINCE GOLF were sent for sampling.
