Racing Incident Report

On leaving the Parade Ring, K C Tsang was dislodged from MAESTRO. BOLD'N POWER, which was standing with its head turning slightly to the left side, came from the gates awkwardly and shifted across from the running of MAESTRO which had been slowly away. ON SHAN EXPRESS left the gates very awkwardly and was then crowded for room between HIN YUEN'S UNICORN which shifted out and GOLDEN STRIDE. WIN HUNTER missed the start slightly, then in the early stages raced greenly and was awkward just inside the heels of UTMOST EASY. In the early and middle stages, ENGINEERING WONDER hung out badly, covered a lot of ground and raced without cover. In the middle stages, GOLDEN STRIDE proved very difficult to settle, several times threw its head about and shifted out from behind HIN YUEN'S UNICORN. Then in the Straight, GOLDEN STRIDE hung out, because of this about the 200 Metres, W C Marwing stopped riding and changed his whip hand. In the latter part of the Home Turn, HONOURABLE hung out. The Stewards allowed Y T Cheng (BOLD'N POWER) and Mr Christopher Cheung, assistant trainer to Mr S T Wong, an opportunity of explaining the horse's improved run today when compared with its performance last Wednesday 23 October 2002. Mr Cheung had previously advised the Stewards Mr Wong, who was having health problems, was not available to attend today's meeting. Y T Cheng said the instructions on both occasions were identical, that was to endeavour to leave the gates well, find some cover near the front and ride the horse hard over the concluding stages. He pointed out although BOLD'N POWER was up in class today, it was carrying 20 lbs less and the gates were almost identical. He said on Wednesday BOLD'N POWER jumped very badly, he was not able to carry out the instructions he had been given and the horse was disappointing. He said today BOLD'N POWER came from the gates awkwardly again, but it did lead with the other runners, he was able to ride it as instructed. Mr Cheung confirmed the instructions and was of the view the improved performance today could be attributed almost entirely to the different manner in which BOLD'N POWER left the starting gates on the two occasions. HONOURABLE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, HONOURABLE was examined. No significant findings detected. BOLD'N POWER and HIN YUEN'S UNICORN were sent for sampling.
