Racing Incident Report

The Stewards tonight considered a written complaint from Trainer I W Allan that Apprentice M W Leung had broken an acceptance of the ride on SPEED LORD. Evidence was taken from Mr Allan, his assistant trainer D Shum, Apprentice M W Leung and Mr G Lane, the allocated trainer of Apprentice Leung. It was established on 16 November 2002 Apprentice Leung worked SPEED LORD at the request of Mr Shum. Following this work Apprentice Leung accepted from Mr Allan the offer to ride the horse at its next race start. No date or race were specified at this time. Apprentice Leung rode SPEED LORD in its work on a further four occasions subsequent to this date. On 22 November 2002, the day entries for tonight's race were published, Mr Shum contacted Apprentice Leung to confirm he would ride SPEED LORD in this race. At this time Apprentice Leung informed Mr Shum he had, on 14 November 2002, accepted a firm commitment to ride on CHAMP DE UNION, in this specific race, and he was therefore not able to ride SPEED LORD. On the evidence the Stewards were satisfied Apprentice Leung had not been firmly engaged to ride SPEED LORD in this race and in these circumstances no action was taken. MERRY MERRY was withdrawn on 25.11.02 on veterinary grounds (left fore tendon injury) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter SUPER GOAL STRIKER (Y T Cheng). As previously reported, before MERRY MERRY can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. ONE STEP AHEAD began awkwardly and lost ground. CHAMP DE UNION shifted out abruptly at the start. Shortly after the start, STARWAY PATROL and EASTERN PURPLE brushed. At the 700 Metres, SAINTLY PARTNERS, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up and shifted out. As a consequence, STARWAY PATROL was carried out and bumped CHAMP DE UNION. On the latter part of the Home Turn, ONE STEP AHEAD was held up for running between SAINTLY PARTNERS and FLORAL KING. In the Straight, LIFELINE EXPRESS hung in and proved difficult to ride out. VICTORY WARRIOR and WYNDAM EASY were sent for sampling.
