Racing Incident Report

Before the race, BRILLIANT PALACE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had a small abrasion to its left hock. The horse in his opinion was not lame and he said it was suitable to race. After arriving at the Start, FLORAL DANCER was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. No abnormalities were detected. After the necessary consultations, the horse was passed suitable to race. Also after arriving at the Start, KNIGHT TEMPLAR was trotted up and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. No abnormalities were detected. The horse was passed suitable to race. BRILLIANT PALACE left the gates awkwardly. BROSE'S HONOR left the gates very awkwardly and threw its head about. MY PRIZE, which was standing with its head down, was slowly away. When the gates opened, UNIVERSAL PIONEER bounded in the air, then shifted in abruptly. In the early stages, MY DELIGHT, which from a difficult gate was being ridden quietly, got its head on the side and hung in. Near the 400 Metres, KNIGHT TEMPLAR and ON SHAN EXPRESS came together due to KNIGHT TEMPLAR shifting out. The Stewards overruled the protest/objection lodged by S Dye, the rider of AFICIONADO, which finished 4th, against HONOURABLE (M Cahill) being declared 2nd of the race. S Dye alleged interference to his mount near the 600 Metres, at about the 500 Metres and again in the Straight. The Stewards considered whilst HONOURABLE did get its head on the side and lay in at about the 600 Metres, caused some crowding to AFICIONADO and again shifted in slightly after the 500 Metres, causing interference to AFICIONADO, they did not consider, bearing in mind the margin between the two horses at the finish, that AFICIONADO would have finished in front of HONOURABLE had the crowding which did take place not occurred. Accordingly the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. Subsequently M Cahill was told he should at all times make every effort to avoid causing crowding to other runners. Before the race, the Stewards were aware that Mr L Fownes, trainer of METRO FLYER, was not on course nor was the assistant trainer Mr C Fownes. The matter was discussed with W C Marwing who said he had discussed riding tactics with the owners. Subsequent to the race, W C Marwing said at no time had he talked about the riding of METRO FLYER with the trainer or the assistant trainer, however, he was told the owners had considered the matter with the trainer that from a difficult gate it was decided to ride METRO FLYER more quietly than in the past. He said the horse came from the stalls very slowly, got further back than planned and until about the 800 Metres for him to have gone forward would have meant covering a lot of ground. W C Marwing said he was aware the race had basically divided into two groups and further he was aware he was too far back, but in the circumstances he had little alternative. The explanation submitted by Mr Fownes regarding not being on course before the race was accepted. AMO and HONOURABLE were sent for sampling.
