Racing Incident Report

SIMON'S DECISION was withdrawn on 15.2.03 on veterinary grounds (lame both fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter SOUTHERN TREASURE (H K Yim). Before SIMON'S DECISION can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. On jumping, EL CAPITAN shifted in and bumped BUTTERFORD. HARRIS CHOICE jumped awkwardly. SOUTHERN TREASURE began awkwardly and bounded in the air, then shifted out and bumped MR HAPPY which was carried in slightly by FOREVER GOLD. In this incident, MR HAPPY was checked and H K Yim, the rider of SOUTHERN TREASURE, became badly unbalanced and lost the use of his left side stirrup iron for a short distance. In the early stages, CALVADOS raced ungenerously and was inclined to hang in. From a wide barrier, FOREVER GOLD was obliged to race wide and without cover throughout. At about the 300 Metres, PERFECT SCORE was struck on the head by the whip of E Saint-Martin (HANDSOME MAN). Over the concluding stages, SOUTHERN TREASURE hung out. In the Straight when under pressure, CITY FORTUNE hung in and at about the 100 Metres shifted ground and obliged R Fradd, its rider, to stop riding and straighten. D Whyte (BONANZA) said the horse was a little slow to begin, he immediately rode along in an endeavour to make ground, however, the horse did not respond. He said BONANZA did not travel at any stage of the race and at about the 100 Metres made what in his opinion was a significant abnormal breathing noise. He immediately checked his breeches to see if the horse had bled and when he was unable to see any blood, he decided it was in the best interest of BONANZA not to ride it out to the end of the race. BONANZA was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. Following the race, a veterinary examination including an endoscopy of BONANZA was conducted. A problem with the soft palate was noted. SOUTHERN TREASURE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of SOUTHERN TREASURE after the race did not show any significant findings. CITY FORTUNE and SPOT ON were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer noted HARRIS CHOICE had blood present at the left nostril. An endoscopic examination was carried out. This confirmed the blood originated from the horse's lungs and as such HARRIS CHOICE was reported to have bled.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 17 Feb. 2003) :
Following its race yesterday, BONANZA was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had a soft palate problem. This morning BONANZA was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer L Ho. At this time it was noted the horse was lame in the right fore leg. Before BONANZA can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
