Racing Incident Report

AHEAD A HEAD began awkwardly and got its head up. STRATEGUS bounded in the air at the start and lost ground. FLAGS UP knuckled on jumping. Shortly after the start, CHUK WAY and GLOBAL FORTUNE were crowded for room between STRATEGUS and TIRAMISU which was taken in by WIN HUNTER. Also shortly after the start, JUSTINIAN was steadied away from the heels of BORN TO WIN after being carried out by SHOW BRAVELY. In the early stages, FLASH HARRY proved difficult to settle. From a gate towards the outside, GOLFING PARTNERS was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners close to the rail. GOLFING PARTNERS proved difficult to settle in the early stages. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, AHEAD A HEAD, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up, commenced to hang out and was checked away from the heels of SILVERBIRD. After this, AHEAD A HEAD continued to hang out. After the 600 Metres, GLOBAL FORTUNE was steadied following AHEAD A HEAD which lost ground while hanging. Near the 200 Metres, FLASH HARRY and SILVERBIRD bumped due mainly to FLASH HARRY shifting in while hanging. At the 200 Metres, G Mossé (GOLFING PARTNERS) dropped his whip. After the 200 Metres, BORN TO WIN, which was giving ground, was steadied when crowded for room between GLOBAL FORTUNE and STRATEGUS (F Coetzee) which when being shifted to the outside of FLASH HARRY to obtain clear running was not clear. In the circumstances, it was decided appropriate that F Coetzee be severely reprimanded. Also after the 200 Metres, GOLFING PARTNERS was checked to avoid the heels of TIRAMISU which shifted out abruptly after being bumped by AHEAD A HEAD (S Dye) which shifted out abruptly when struck with the whip. Inconvenience was also caused to SHOW BRAVELY on the outside of GOLFING PARTNERS. As the Stewards were satisfied S Dye immediately stopped riding and straightened his mount, no action was taken, however, he was advised in circumstances similar to this, he would be expected to refrain from using the whip. C Soumillon (WIN HUNTER) was reprimanded for making a celebratory gesture prior to the post. AHEAD A HEAD was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of AHEAD A HEAD following the race did not show any significant findings. STRATEGUS, WIN HUNTER and FLASH HARRY were sent for sampling. Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported GLOBAL FORTUNE had damaged a lower incisor tooth at the Start.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 17 Feb. 2003) :
After the race, AHEAD A HEAD, which had hung out over the final 800 Metres, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were noted at that time. AHEAD A HEAD was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer this morning at the stables of Trainer J Size. The horse was noted to have significant soreness of the "hamstring" muscles in both hind legs. Before racing again, AHEAD A HEAD will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
