Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, it was noted DIAMOND MOON had spread its right fore plate. This plate was reset. The horse was trotted up and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. TOY QUEST and MASCOT TREASURE were slow to begin. LITTLE ELEPHANT began awkwardly and bounded in the air, consequently lost ground. On jumping, LUCKY OWNERS shifted in abruptly and bumped DIAMOND MOON. In the early stages, HELENE PILLAGING, which was having its first start in blinkers, proved difficult to settle. At the 700 Metres, ROYAL ARMY lost ground when behind DIAMOND MOON which in turn was behind SNIPPETYIYEA which commenced to give ground. In the early part of the Straight, MASCOT TREASURE was hampered and carried wider by LUCKY OWNERS which shifted ground while hanging. After the 400 Metres, ROYAL ARMY was bumped by LUCKY LAD which shifted to the outside of DIAMOND MOON to obtain clear running. A Marcus (LITTLE ELEPHANT) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that after the 200 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of CHINOOK, causing that horse to lose its rightful running and be checked. A Marcus was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 22 May 2003 on which day he may resume race riding (4 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley meeting next Wednesday 7 May 2003. F Coetzee (LUCKY OWNERS) said in the past the horse had shown that it did not finish its races off when taken on in the lead. He said it was anticipated there would be good pace in today's race and he was therefore instructed to ride the horse with cover if possible. He said LUCKY OWNERS began well, travelled into a forward position, at the 1100 Metres he elected to steady in the hope of finding cover behind DIAMOND MOON which he was able to do. He said however he was still obliged to race four wide on the outside of ROYAL ARMY. He said when the horse commenced to turn at the 800 Metres, it did not appear comfortable in today's ground and became unbalanced on occasions. He said in the Straight despite showing its usual tendency to lay out, LUCKY OWNERS finished the race off nicely. He said in his opinion LUCKY OWNERS showed by the manner in which it raced today that it is now looking for a distance further than 1400 Metres. HELENE PILLAGING was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, HELENE PILLAGING was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. LUCKY OWNERS, SENSIBLE WAY and LITTLE ELEPHANT were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 5 May 2003) :
After the race, HELENE PILLAGING was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer and at that time he said there were no significant findings.  HELENE PILLAGING was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer this morning at the stables of Trainer D A Hayes.  It was noted to be mildly lame on the left fore leg.
Before racing again, HELENE PILLAGING will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
