Racing Incident Report
WATCH ME WIN was slow to begin. GOLD FIELD began awkwardly, put its head down and shortly after the start was steadied when crowded for room between MONZA KING and HIGH SKY which was taken out by EXPLOSIVE POWER. On jumping, HAPPY FORTUNE shifted out and bumped LIGHT FOOT, then shifted in and bumped FORTUNE DANCER. Making the Home Turn, CUPID and FORTUNE DANCER were carried wider by GOLD FIELD which shifted out to improve. Shortly after straightening, GOLD FIELD was checked when crowded for room between CUPID and HIGH SKY (G Mossé) which was endeavouring to shift to the outside of LIGHT FOOT to obtain clear running as that horse was shifted out. As G Mossé immediately shifted his horse in to relieve the crowding, it was considered appropriate on this occasion to issue a severe reprimand to him. D Whyte (MONZA KING) explained he had ridden his mount hard from the 800 Metres, making the Home Turn it was not travelling well and this allowed FORTUNE DANCER to improve through on his inside. He said he continued to ride MONZA KING along in the early part of the Straight, but the horse did not respond to his riding. He said for a short distance near the 200 Metres he eased slightly his riding and he then recommenced riding MONZA KING along over the concluding stages when it passed tiring horses. The Stewards were satisfied D Whyte's riding of MONZA KING for a short distance near the 200 Metres did not affect the horse's finishing position, therefore no action was taken, however, he was told he would be expected to ride his mounts out in the Straight at all times wherever possible. HIGH SKY and HAPPY FORTUNE were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, HIGH SKY and HAPPY FORTUNE were examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. DANEFACTOR and EXPLOSIVE POWER were sent for sampling.
