Racing Incident Report

CHAMP DE UNION, which was fractious after being boxed, reared as the gates opened, began very awkwardly and consequently lost ground. MAJIN BUU was slow to begin. Mr C Fownes, trainer of MY CHIEF, said in its last start which was the horse's first wearing blinkers, MY CHIEF over-raced badly throughout the early and middle stages, at the 700 Metres clipped the heels of a runner in front and then failed to finish the race off. He said prior to that race MY CHIEF had barrier trialed in blinkers and did relax well, however, the atmosphere of the race appeared to stir the horse up. He said because of this he made application to remove blinkers from MY CHIEF and as a result of that gear change the horse settled well in today's run and was able to close off strongly. The explanations submitted by Mr C Fownes were accepted. C Williams (THE GRAND ROOF) explained he had been instructed to do his utmost to ride the horse on the fence. He said shortly after the start he was able to shift to the fence, however, was a little further back than he would have liked and was obliged to remain there as there was not comfortable room for him to improve on the inside of AMO. He said making the Home Turn he improved to the inside of AMO, then became aware that there was sufficient racing room for him to improve on the inside of GOOD FRIENDS and JOLLY GAINS along the fence, therefore he had hoped to improve into that running. He said before he was able to go forward, GOOD FRIENDS shifted back to the rail in front of him and by that stage he had improved to the inside of the heels of SALUT BEAUTE which had commenced to give ground, consequently he was held up for running for some distance approaching and passing the 200 Metres after which GOOD FRIENDS shifted away from the running rail and provided him with running. He acknowledged in hindsight it may have been a better option for him to have shifted to the outside of SALUT BEAUTE after straightening, however, at the time he felt he had an equal opportunity of obtaining running along the inner as he had been instructed. C Williams was told his explanations were recorded. SALUT BEAUTE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of SALUT BEAUTE after the race did not show any significant findings. MY CHIEF and JOLLY GAINS were sent for sampling.
