Racing Incident Report

INDUSTRIAL PRIDE stood flat-footed and lost a considerable amount of ground. Before being allowed to race again, INDUSTRIAL PRIDE will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. On jumping, HAPPY CONTENDER was bumped by NOBLE MAN which began awkwardly and shifted out. Also on jumping, OPERATION HUMOUR and SANBENITO bumped. Near the 1000 Metres, OPERATION HUMOUR was steadied when crowded for room by SANBENITO (J Quinn) which shifted in when not clear. In the circumstances, J Quinn was severely reprimanded and advised to exercise more care. For some distance after this incident, OPERATION HUMOUR was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SANBENITO. Shortly after straightening, TRUST ME was shifted in away from the heels of OPERATION HUMOUR. After the 200 Metres, SMART HORSE was momentarily tightened for room inside INDUSTRIAL PRIDE. Throughout the race, HAPPY CONTENDER raced wide and without cover, then in the Straight gave ground. C Williams (FORTUNE LIFE) explained he had been instructed to have the horse in a forward position tonight from a good barrier. He said these instructions were consistent with those issued last start, however, on that occasion the horse was a little awkward to begin and then after being steadied near the winning post on the first occasion got further back than was intended. He said on that occasion because of the circumstances he made his run around the field, however, it was felt tonight if ridden in a forward position on the fence he would be able to use the fence to his advantage and would not be required to cover additional ground. The explanations of C Williams were accepted. F Coetzee (NOBLE MAN), which was having its first start at Happy Valley tonight, said the horse's work leading into tonight's race had been good. He was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of NOBLE MAN other than in his opinion it did not handle the Happy Valley track. NOBLE MAN was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of NOBLE MAN after the race did not show any significant findings. LATTE and INDUSTRIAL PRIDE were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 30 October 2003)
NOBLE MAN, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. NOBLE MAN was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer A T Millard this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to have multiple small lacerations and bruising to the outside of the right front cannon.
