Racing Incident Report

W M Lai (SPECTACULAR WIN) was fined $5,000 for wearing boots which included lead weights [Rule 93(3)]. After arriving at the barrier, TRULY THE BEST was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. He said the horse had a small amount of blood in its mouth due to a cut to the tip of the tongue. TRULY THE BEST was passed suitable to race. EQUUS ZEPHYRUS and KASHMAC were slow to begin. As the gates opened, DRAGON WIN got its head up and lost ground. At the 1600 Metres, AQUA PRINCE became unbalanced when awkwardly placed on the inside of DANELAW. When the pace quickened after the 800 Metres, CAVIAR ONE was placed under pressure and immediately commenced to hang out. In the early part of the Home Straight, PREDATOR hung in. At the 300 Metres, DRAGON WIN was steadied to avoid the heels of TALK OF THE TOWN and shifted out. In the circumstances, no action was taken. J Spencer (TALK OF THE TOWN) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that after the 300 Metres he shifted his mount out when not clear of TRULY THE BEST which was carried out across the running of THE ONLY HERO which lost its rightful running and was severely checked. J Spencer was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Sunday 26 January 2003 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of this suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley meeting next Wednesday 15 January 2003. J Spencer said his horse was reluctant to race inside other runners during the race. He added after the 1200 Metres, he endeavoured to maintain a position behind NAZAKAT II and to the inside of DRAGON WIN, however, his horse was reluctant to hold its position and ended up further back than was intended. TALK OF THE TOWN was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. Following the race, TALK OF THE TOWN was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. AQUA PRINCE, which commenced to give ground at the 700 Metres and finished tailed off, was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, the horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer. An endoscopic examination showed AQUA PRINCE had a significant amount of mucus in the trachea. Before AQUA PRINCE can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. EQUUS ZEPHYRUS and NAZAKAT II were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted DANELAW was making an abnormal breathing noise. The horse has previously been reported as a "roarer".
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 13 Jan. 2003) :
A post race examination of AQUA PRINCE showed the horse had a significant amount of mucus in the trachea. AQUA PRINCE was again examined yesterday at the stables of Trainer P C Kan. The Senior Veterinary Officer reported at this time the horse was noted to have significant swelling of the left fore fetlock, however, was not significantly lame at the trot.
As previously reported, before AQUA PRINCE can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
