Racing Incident Report

PREMIER SPEED and MASTERY were slow to begin. CONVERGENCE was slow to begin and shortly afterwards was crowded for room between DASHING CHAMPION which shifted out and FRUITFUL TRIP which was carried in by JOYFUL MASTER. As a consequence, CONVERGENCE got well back. The Stewards inquired into an incident which occurred after the 1000 Metres. Evidence was taken from C Soumillon (PARADIS), E Saint-Martin (ROYAL ARMY), D Whyte (LITTLE ELEPHANT) and Apprentice K T Yeung (VICTORY MASTER). C Soumillon explained after the 1000 Metres he became concerned that VICTORY MASTER would shift across his running when not fully clear. He said he elected to steady his mount to avoid being interfered with and as soon as he did this, the head of PARADIS turned out and it shifted about two horses wider on the track, in doing so carried ROYAL ARMY wider. This shift also allowed LITTLE ELEPHANT, which had been racing on the rail behind DASHING CHAMPION, to shift out into clear running and obtain a position outside DASHING CHAMPION. C Soumillon was told his riding after the 1000 Metres had come under notice and in slightly different circumstances he could find himself in breach of a serious rule. He was told when riding in Hong Kong he must at all times do his utmost to maintain his racing position and ride competitively. Over the concluding stages, LITTLE ELEPHANT hung in away from the heels of ROYAL ARMY. This caused some crowding to DASHING CHAMPION. As a consequence of it hanging, LITTLE ELEPHANT was not ridden to the line as it normally would be. LITTLE ELEPHANT, PALETTE NATURAL and ROYAL ARMY were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted PREMIER SPEED was making an abnormal breathing noise. An endoscopic examination was carried out. The Veterinary Officer said this showed PREMIER SPEED to be a "roarer". Before PREMIER SPEED can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
