Racing Incident Report

GRANDWAY SHUTTLE was slow to begin and shortly after the start was steadied when crowded for room between BACCHUS and MONEY, both of which shifted ground. ALF, which was not standing well, began awkwardly. Throughout the race, BACCHUS hung out and at the 700 Metres shifted ground and was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of SONGS OF THE SUN. Over about the last 250 Metres when under pressure, MAJOR BEE got its head on the side and shifted out. S Dye (NORTHERN MAGNATE) explained he had no prior knowledge of the horse and only picked up today's ride as a late substitution. He said he had been instructed by Mr A S Cruz, trainer of NORTHERN MAGNATE, to lead as the horse had shown the stable good early speed. S Dye said on jumping he immediately rode NORTHERN MAGNATE along in an endeavour to carry out his instructions, however, the horse did not show the necessary early speed to take the lead, then for a short distance at the 800 Metres he was awkwardly placed inside the heels of BACCHUS which was carried in slightly by SONGS OF THE SUN. He said when this pressure was relieved, he immediately rode NORTHERN MAGNATE along to try and get the horse to travel into the race and shortly afterwards pulled the whip. He said despite his riding, NORTHERN MAGNATE did not respond at any stage. Mr Cruz explained NORTHERN MAGNATE had a history of shin soreness since its arrival in Hong Kong and for this reason did not race as a griffin. He said since the horse's last race 52 days ago, its work had been good and had trialed well on two occasions. He said he was happy with the condition of NORTHERN MAGNATE leading up into today's race and was adamant it had shown no signs of shin soreness before the run. He said this was confirmed by the horse being passed during the pre-race veterinary examination. Mr Cruz was unable to offer any explanation for the horse's performance and said he was hopeful a veterinary examination of the horse may shed some light on this matter. NORTHERN MAGNATE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of NORTHERN MAGNATE after the race did not reveal any significant findings. The Veterinary Officer advised a further examination of NORTHERN MAGNATE will be carried out tomorrow. The performance of NORTHERN MAGNATE was considered unacceptable. Before NORTHERN MAGNATE can race again, it must perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. WINNING PARADE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, WINNING PARADE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. MAXIMUM JOY and MAJOR BEE were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported BACCHUS was bleeding from both nostrils. Following the race, D Whyte reported GOLDEN FARM was making an abnormal breathing noise. A veterinary examination was carried out including an endoscopic examination. No significant findings were detected.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 27 Jan. 2003) :
Immediately following NORTHERN MAGNATE's poor performance in this race, it was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time he was not able to detect any abnormalities.
The Senior Veterinary Officer today reported when he examined NORTHERN MAGNATE at the stables of Trainer A S Cruz yesterday, the horse was "jarred up" on both fore fetlocks and lame in the left fore leg.
As previously advised, NORTHERN MAGNATE will not be allowed to race again until it performs competitively in an official barrier trial and passes an official veterinary examination.
