Racing Incident Report

JOYOUS CHEERS bounded in the air when the gates opened. BRILLIANT was slow to begin. At the 1100 Metres, DANZIGFIRE was steadied when crowded for room by MANIFEST which shifted in. Throughout the race, FANTASTIC SHADOW raced greenly and at the 1000 Metres was steadied when close to the heels of MANIFEST. Then for some distance after this, FANTASTIC SHADOW, which continued to race greenly, was awkwardly placed inside the heels of LASER GLORY (C Soumillon) which shifted in when not quite clear. LUCKY LUCKY, which was following, was hampered in consequence. The Stewards considered FANTASTIC SHADOW itself had contributed to this incident and therefore it was decided the appropriate action to be taken was for C Soumillon to be severely reprimanded. Near the winning post, HURRY UP was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of NOBLE VICTORY which shifted out. E Legrix (NOBLE VICTORY) said when he rode the horse at its last race start over 1200 Metres on the All Weather Track, he was instructed to lead. He said in accordance with those instructions, he rode his mount along hard in the early stages to obtain a forward position. He said however on that occasion NOBLE VICTORY failed to finish the race off and tired noticeably in the Straight. He said immediately following that race he advised the connections that in his opinion NOBLE VICTORY would be better suited ridden quietly and given a chance to finish its race off. He went on to say NOBLE VICTORY had shown a tendency to race greenly and therefore it was decided to add a visor to the gear of the horse tonight. He said tonight it was decided from a wide barrier to ride NOBLE VICTORY in a rearward position. He said accordingly immediately on jumping he steadied his mount and shifted it across behind runners to race on the fence. He said in the early stages NOBLE VICTORY raced keenly, however, making the first turn was inclined to hang out, then in the Straight he persevered for inside runs and NOBLE VICTORY made nice ground along the rail until after the 100 Metres when he shifted the horse to the outside of JOYOUS CHEERS to obtain clear running. He said when in the clear, NOBLE VICTORY shifted out away from other runners and over the concluding stages was somewhat green. Mr B K Ng, trainer of NOBLE VICTORY, confirmed the riding instructions given to E Legrix. He added subsequent to the horse's most recent start, it had performed well in a barrier trial wearing a visor and being ridden quietly. W C Marwing (LUCKY LUCKY) was unable to offer any explanation for the horse's poor performance. He said he had been riding the horse in its track work leading up to the race and in his opinion this work had been good, because of this the horse was given a good chance by the stable in tonight's race. He added on the strength of LUCKY LUCKY's work he chose to ride that horse in preference to the eventual winner JOYOUS CHEERS. He said LUCKY LUCKY began well, obtained a good position about midfield and the fact that the horse was hampered at about the 800 Metres in the circumstances of tonight's race was of little significance. He said when placed under pressure in the Straight, LUCKY LUCKY did not respond to his riding. LUCKY LUCKY was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of LUCKY LUCKY following the race did not show any significant findings. JOYOUS CHEERS and LASER GLORY were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted FANTASTIC SHADOW had sustained a cut to the right hind coronet.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 13 Feb. 2003) :
A veterinary examination of LUCKY LUCKY, which performed poorly, immediately following the race did not show any abnormalities. The horse was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer K L Man this morning and at this time it was noted to be restricted in its action behind with soreness of its rump muscles. Before LUCKY LUCKY can race again, it will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
