Racing Incident Report

CHERISHED was withdrawn on 10.3.03 on veterinary grounds (colic) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter MILLENNIUM SUPREME. When the gates opened, HURRY UP, which was leaning on the inside of its stall, began awkwardly, bounded and on landing knuckled, causing W M Lai, its rider, to become unbalanced. At the start, I DELIVER shifted out abruptly and caused inconvenience to GOOD HEART. GREEN VACATION bounded in the air at the start. On jumping, HIGHLIGHT was crowded for room between ELEGANCE and ALBELA, both of which shifted ground. When the gates opened, MILLENNIUM SUPREME was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to race on the rail but at the rear. Near the 200 Metres, JUST IN TIME was disappointed for running between I DELIVER and ME AND YOU. To obtain clear running, JUST IN TIME was shifted to the inside of I DELIVER. Over the concluding stages, HURRY UP was awkwardly placed close to the heels of ME AND YOU and SMART WIN. As a consequence of this, HURRY UP was not ridden out to the end of the race. Throughout the race, ALBELA hung in. Also throughout the race, ELEGANCE was obliged to race wide without cover and commenced to give ground quickly on the Home Turn. ELEGANCE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, ELEGANCE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. G Mossé (LATTE) explained he had been instructed to lead if possible and accordingly he went forward from the start. He said I DELIVER went forward on his inside and was keen to maintain the rail, he therefore attempted to steady LATTE and maintained his position outside that horse, however, as soon as he did this, ELEGANCE improved to his outside and as a consequence LATTE commenced to over-race and would not settle. He said LATTE continued to over-race in the middle stages and gave ground on straightening. G Mossé's explanations were accepted. Trainer K W Lui (JUST IN TIME) attributed the improved performance of the horse to the fact that it had drawn more favourably than its most recent starts and because of this was able to find the rail which appeared to be an advantage tonight. He said he did instruct C Williams, the horse's rider, to endeavour to make use of the horse's better gate tonight and ride the horse slightly closer than in recent runs. JUST IN TIME and GOOD HEART were sent for sampling.
