Racing Incident Report

After being boxed, ASALI became fractious. The horse was removed from its stall, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. On jumping, WISHMASTER bounded in the air, then in the early stages proved difficult to settle. Also on jumping, MARANELLO and STRONG GALLOP bumped. MY CHIEF and ASALI were slow to begin. BEST FOR ALL began awkwardly and then despite being ridden along failed to muster speed. Near the 700 Metres, WISHMASTER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of ASALI which shifted in. On straightening, MY CHIEF was shifted out to obtain clear running. S Dye (PALETTE NATURAL) said the intention had been to ride the horse in a rearward position today from its outside barrier. He said when the gates opened, PALETTE NATURAL propped and shifted out, he then elected to follow KIMBERLEY MINES across as that horse was also being ridden in a rearward position. He said when racing behind KIMBERLEY MINES and MY CHIEF, those horses became detached from the main field for some 4 to 5 lengths and for him to improve his position after the 1000 Metres would have meant going around those runners and in his opinion this would have been detrimental to his chances. He said KIMBERLEY MINES did not carry him forward as he had hoped in the middle stages and he therefore elected to commence improving on that horse's outside after the 700 Metres and this meant that he was the widest runner entering the Straight. He said in the Straight PALETTE NATURAL finished the race off nicely. He said it was never his intention to be as far back as it turned out, however, when racing behind KIMBERLEY MINES and that horse did not go forward, he was placed in a difficult situation. Y T Cheng (KIMBERLEY MINES) said as is usual the primary intention of the horse today was to ensure it was settled, accordingly on jumping he steadied his mount immediately so as not to allow it the opportunity to over-race. He said when steadying KIMBERLEY MINES, he was aware he had other runners around him and despite being some distance off runners in front, he considered it best to continue ensuring KIMBERLEY MINES was settled. He acknowledged that by doing this, he was further back than he should have been. The Stewards advised Y T Cheng they understand the riding instructions issued for this horse, however, he should be careful not to overdo such instructions. WISHMASTER was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, WISHMASTER was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was mildly distressed. HIDDEN DRAGON and SENSIBLE WAY were sent for sampling.
