Racing Incident Report

On jumping, INDY'S GEM was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position on the rail but at the rear. Also on jumping, YACHT MASTER was tightened for room between GOOD BOY and TOP OF THE CROWN. At the 1300 Metres, SHARE THE FUN was steadied away from the heels of BRILLIANT ATTORNEY which steadied after reaching the lead. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, SHARE THE FUN was reluctant to hold its position inside ON SHAN EXPRESS. Making the Home Turn, SURE FORTUNE was held up and unable to obtain clear running when racing behind AFICIONADO and ON SHAN EXPRESS. Throughout the race, AFICIONADO raced wide and without cover, then on straightening gave ground. In the Straight, TOP OF THE CROWN, which had commenced to give ground at the 600 Metres, was eased down. TOP OF THE CROWN was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, TOP OF THE CROWN was examined by the Veterinary Officer. An endoscopic examination showed the horse to have a pharyngeal collapse. It was also noted to have a large amount of track material in the throat and trachea. Before being allowed to race again, TOP OF THE CROWN will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A Delpech (FANTASTIC HORSE) said when winning over the course and distance at its last start, the horse had obtained a soft lead and was able to dictate the race. He said FANTASTIC HORSE began only fairly and was slow to muster pace whilst BRILLIANT ATTORNEY was being hard ridden from the outside to go forward. He said he allowed FANTASTIC HORSE to continue working forward and crossed to join BRILLIANT ATTORNEY after the 1200 Metres, however, because of the solid pace in the early stages of the race, FANTASTIC HORSE had been required to do too much work and gave ground quickly in the Straight. FANTASTIC HORSE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of FANTASTIC HORSE after the race did not show any significant findings. When questioned regarding the poor performance of ON SHAN EXPRESS, R Fradd said whilst the horse had worked well on the All Weather surface in the mornings, it did not appear to be totally comfortable racing on it. He added ON SHAN EXPRESS was not able to obtain a soft lead today because of what he believed to be the solid pace in the early stages. He said to avoid doing too much work to hold a leading position, after the 1200 Metres he elected to steady and race behind BRILLIANT ATTORNEY and FANTASTIC HORSE. He said as soon as he did this, ON SHAN EXPRESS dropped the bit and did not respond afterwards. ON SHAN EXPRESS was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, ON SHAN EXPRESS was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was noted to be blowing heavily and making a mild respiratory noise. An endoscopic examination was carried out. This showed no significant findings. SURE FORTUNE, FAT CHANCE and GOOD BOY were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 6 October 2003)
After the race, TOP OF THE CROWN, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time an endoscopic examination showed the horse to have a pharyngeal collapse. It was also noted to have a large amount of track material in the throat and trachea. TOP OF THE CROWN was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer K W Lui this morning and at this time was found to be very stiff in both hind legs.
As previously advised, TOP OF THE CROWN will be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination before racing again.
