Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, CLAWS OF THUNDER, which had bumped a rail in the Parade Ring, was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. As the gates opened, CLAWS OF THUNDER sat back and consequently was slow to begin. FABULOUS was slow to begin. STOIC was a little slow to begin and shortly afterwards was checked when crowded for room between MAIN ATTRACTION and FORTUNE DANCER which was taken out abruptly by MONZA KING which on jumping shifted out abruptly. At the 1500 Metres, MILLENNIUM SPIRIT, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up when being steadied to avoid the heels of OPTIC FRIENDLY (W Woods) which shifted in. In the circumstances, W Woods was severely reprimanded and told he must allow sufficient racing room to runners on his inside at all times. At the 200 Metres, STOIC and MONZA KING were steadied when disappointed for running between HIGH SPIRITS and LIGHT FOOT which shifted in slightly. Over the concluding stages, CUPID was awkwardly placed close to the heels of OPTIC FRIENDLY which was giving ground, because of this was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. W C Marwing (MILLENNIUM SPIRIT) explained in the early stages due mainly to the pace of the race MILLENNIUM SPIRIT was difficult to settle and as a result raced further forward than is normal. He said passing the 1200 Metres MILLENNIUM SPIRIT relaxed underneath him and rather than ride the horse along to keep SPECIFIC SORCEROR which had been racing in front of him to his outside three wide, he elected to allow that horse to shift in. He said in his opinion if he had ridden MILLENNIUM SPIRIT along at that time, the horse would have again commenced to over-race and this would have been detrimental to its chances. He said he also had in mind he had been instructed to ensure MILLENNIUM SPIRIT made its run on the outside of horses and he felt by allowing SPECIFIC SORCEROR to shift in front of him, it would allow him to shift out after the 800 Metres to ensure he made his run on the outside. SPECIFIC SORCEROR and LIGHT FOOT were sent for sampling. After the race, HIGH SPIRITS was noted to be bleeding from a laceration to the tongue.
