Racing Incident Report

HELENE ELEGANCE, first Standby Declared Starter, was withdrawn on 18.11.03 on veterinary grounds (lame right fore). Before being allowed to race again, HELENE ELEGANCE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After arriving at the Start, TSZ WAN FORTUNE was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. The horse was trotted up and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. CHAMP DE UNION began awkwardly. ENGINEERING WONDER began awkwardly, then shortly afterwards was checked when crowded for room between EASY GAME and TSZ WAN FORTUNE, which after beginning awkwardly and bumping the hindquarters of SONGS OF THE SUN, then shifted in abruptly away from that horse which itself shifted in. In this incident, EASY GAME was hampered and lost ground. In the circumstances, no action was taken. In the early stages, CARRY THE NEWS proved very difficult to settle and on a number of occasions got its head up. After the 400 Metres, WELL BEST was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the hindquarters of GRANDWAY SHUTTLE. Approaching the 200 Metres, THE ACHIEVER was steadied when disappointed for running between KALIMANTAN and FELICITY which when giving ground shifted out. For some distance approaching the 200 Metres, WELL BEST raced tight inside GRANDWAY SHUTTLE as it endeavoured to shift to the outside of SONGS OF THE SUN to obtain clear running. After the 200 Metres, WELL BEST, which had its head turned out as it was endeavouring to shift out into clear running, attempted to savage GRANDWAY SHUTTLE. In the circumstances, Mr C S Shum, trainer of WELL BEST, will be advised a warning will be recorded against the horse. Near the 100 Metres, FELICITY, which was continuing to give ground, was steadied and THE ACHIEVER was again disappointed for running between KALIMANTAN which shifted in and CARRY THE NEWS which shifted out. After this, THE ACHIEVER was unable to obtain clear running until just prior to the winning post. Near the winning post, GRANDWAY SHUTTLE was steadied when crowded for room between WELL BEST which shifted out and CARRY THE NEWS which had its head on the side and shifted in away from KALIMANTAN. Because of this, GRANDWAY SHUTTLE was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. When questioned regarding the performance of ENGINEERING WONDER, G Schofield said as a result of being crowded for room at the start, his mount was obliged to race further back in the field than had been anticipated. He added regardless of this ENGINEERING WONDER when placed under pressure in the Straight did not close the race off as he would have expected and in his opinion was disappointing. ENGINEERING WONDER was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, ENGINEERING WONDER was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. THE ACHIEVER, SONGS OF THE SUN and KALIMANTAN were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 20 November 2003)
ENGINEERING WONDER, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. ENGINEERING WONDER was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer L Ho this morning. He said at this time the horse was found to be lame in the right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, ENGINEERING WONDER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
