Racing Incident Report

KINDRED SPIRITS was slow to begin. SMART CHAMPION began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of SIXTY SECONDS. On jumping, ROUND THE WORLD got its head up, shifted out and bumped INDUBITABLY BLISS. From the outside gate, SUPER CHARGE was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to race closer to the rail but at the rear. In the early stages, SMART CHAMPION got its head up and proved very difficult to settle. At the 1000 Metres, SMART CHAMPION was momentarily awkwardly placed close to the heels of FRENCH CONNECTION. Near the 900 Metres, CLASSA WIN was momentarily steadied away from the heels of INDUBITABLY BLISS. After the 600 Metres, PRIME VAIN was crowded for room and INDUBITABLY BLISS checked to avoid the heels of SMART CHAMPION which itself was steadied away from the heels of MASTER YING after hanging out making the turn. At the 400 Metres, CLASSA WIN was steadied and shifted out when disappointed for running between SHABU SHABU and INDUBITABLY BLISS. Shortly after straightening, MASTER YING was crowded for room between SIXTY SECONDS and ROUND THE WORLD, both of which shifted ground. Also after straightening, KINDRED SPIRITS was shifted to the outside of PRIME VAIN to go forward. Near the 200 Metres, ROUND THE WORLD, which was commencing to give ground, was checked when crowded for room between SIXTY SECONDS and SHABU SHABU (M Kinane) which shifted in when not properly clear. In the circumstances, M Kinane was severely reprimanded and advised to exercise more care. Near the 50 Metres, C Soumillon (PRIME VAIN) dropped his whip. Over the concluding stages, KINDRED SPIRITS was unable to obtain clear running between MONEY STRONG and FRENCH CONNECTION. Because of this, KINDRED SPIRITS was not ridden out to the line as it normally would be. Throughout the race, MASTER YING raced in a forward position, but three wide and without cover, then near the 600 Metres commenced to give ground. SMART CHAMPION was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, SMART CHAMPION was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, SMART CHAMPION will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CLASSA WIN and FRENCH CONNECTION were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported that PRIME VAIN had bled from both nostrils.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 11 December 2003)
SMART CHAMPION, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. SMART CHAMPION was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer P F Yiu this morning and at this time was noted to have a stiff restricted hind limb action. As previously advised, SMART CHAMPION will be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.
