Racing Incident Report
MAGNIFIER was slow to begin. MAGIC HANDS began awkwardly. On jumping, INSOCIABLE and DARWIN bumped. In the early stages, INSOCIABLE proved difficult to settle. Also in the early stages, MAGIC HANDS proved difficult to settle and raced wide without cover. After the 400 Metres, SIROCCO was crowded for room between DARWIN and EQUATOR KID which shifted to the outside of LUCKSWELL to obtain clear running. D Boeuf (DARWIN) said he had been instructed to lead if possible and then to commence increasing the tempo of the race from the 600 Metre mark as DARWIN does not possess a sprint at the finish of its races. He said after beginning fairly he rode along in the early stages and crossed to the rail in the lead. He said after the 1700 Metres he looked to his outside and saw JAZZ BEAT travelling forward and he thought it would not have been in his best interest to get in a speed battle with that horse as he knew it had good pace when allowed to run. He therefore steadied his mount and took up a position on the rail behind LUCKSWELL which in turn allowed JAZZ BEAT to cross to the fence and lead. He said after the 1200 Metres JAZZ BEAT commenced to steady the tempo in front, LUCKSWELL shifted to the outside of that horse and he elected to shift DARWIN out from the rail to a three wide position to ensure he had clear running and would be able to commence being ridden along at the 600 Metres. He said when he shifted out, some inconvenience was caused to SIROCCO which caused A Delpech, that horse's rider, to call to him, steady his mount and shift back in. He said he continued to race three wide and without cover outside the leaders, near the 600 Metres commenced to place DARWIN under pressure, however, the horse failed to respond. He said in the Straight DARWIN kept on one paced. Mr J Size, trainer of DARWIN, confirmed the riding instructions given to D Boeuf. He said DARWIN is a natural free running horse, however, today it did not seem to show its usual early speed. He said previously when travelling behind runners DARWIN had proved somewhat difficult to settle and in the circumstances of today's race when the pace steadied near the 1200 Metres, he felt the actions of D Boeuf to shift to a three wide position were reasonable as to have remained behind JAZZ BEAT and to the inside of LUCKSWELL could have placed the horse, given its previous history, in an awkward situation. The Stewards advised D Boeuf that whilst his riding approaching the 1000 Metres was supported by Mr Size, in the circumstances of today's race the matter would not be proceeded with, however, in different circumstances it would be expected that he would maintain a more favourable position on the fence behind the leader. S Dye (GIFT) said the horse appeared lethargic throughout, he commenced riding along near the 800 Metres and endeavoured to improve his position, however, the horse did not respond to his riding. He said in the Straight he rode GIFT out and the horse kept on only one paced, then over the concluding stages shortened in its action. He said after the race he noted some nasal discharge present at the nose of GIFT. GIFT was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, GIFT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being permitted to race again, GIFT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. MAGIC HANDS was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of MAGIC HANDS after the race did not show any significant findings. MAGNIFIER and EQUATOR KID were sent for sampling.
