Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, ENERGETIC PRINCE was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. The horse was trotted up and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. FORTUNE LAD, which was standing badly, bounded in the air at the start, bumped the outside gate of its stall and consequently was slow to begin. NOBLE GLORY was slow to begin and shortly afterwards was checked when crowded for room between SUPER BEST and ENERGETIC PRINCE which on jumping shifted out abruptly. LUCKY ENCOUNTER began awkwardly. Near the 1500 Metres, GUSCOTT was bumped by LUCKY ENCOUNTER which shifted in. At the 900 Metres, CHIU CHOW HERO got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of PROFIT DAY. Prior to straightening, JOHNNY JUMP UP was shifted to the inside of DOMINATION. On straightening, LUCKY ENCOUNTER shifted out to avoid the heels of WATCH KING which was giving ground. Passing the 400 Metres, JOHNNY JUMP UP was held up and unable to improve inside LUCKY ENCOUNTER and behind DOMINATION which was giving ground. Near the 200 Metres, PROFIT DAY and CHIU CHOW HERO bumped. In the Straight, NOBLE GLORY hung in. S Dye (WATCH KING) explained he intended to lead with the horse, however, prior to the start being effected, JOHNNY JUMP UP which had drawn to its outside became very fractious and W Woods, the rider of that horse, called on numerous occasions for assistance from the attendant. S Dye said when this happened WATCH KING became distracted and as a result when the gates opened was slow to begin which is somewhat unusual for the horse. He said WATCH KING then bumped the hindquarters of JOHNNY JUMP UP, he rode along for a short distance, near the 1500 Metres momentarily considered shifting across behind runners to race with cover behind midfield, however, when he attempted to steady WATCH KING, the horse immediately commenced to over-race and proved difficult to settle, he therefore shifted WATCH KING back to the outside of DOMINATION passing the winning post on the first occasion. He said in the past and at its most recent start at Happy Valley WATCH KING had proved very difficult to manage and making the first turn locked its jaw and shifted away from the rail. He said tonight WATCH KING again proved very difficult to manage and ran off making the first turn. He said when he attempted to shift WATCH KING back in towards the rail, the horse locked its jaw and refused to respond to his command. He said after this he gradually allowed WATCH KING to shift back across to race on the outside of the field with the lead, however, because of the manner in which the horse had raced, it was beaten before straightening and then tailed out. He concluded by saying WATCH KING had always been a difficult horse to ride, however, in his opinion in recent times it had become worse. WATCH KING was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of WATCH KING after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of WATCH KING was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, WATCH KING will have to perform competitively and satisfactorily in an official barrier trial around a bend and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A Marcus (ENERGETIC PRINCE) said he had been instructed to have the horse in a prominent position if it began cleanly. He pointed out ENERGETIC PRINCE in the past had shown itself to be not always a reliable beginner. He said previously ENERGETIC PRINCE over the course and distance had raced in a prominent position. He said ENERGETIC PRINCE tonight began cleanly and he was able to travel behind the speed without having to make any real use of the horse. ENERGETIC PRINCE and SUPER BEST were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted JOHNNY JUMP UP had sustained a small laceration to the left front fetlock.
