Racing Incident Report

When being presented at the scales for pre-race weighing, it was noted AIN'T HERE had a superficial abrasion on the left hind cannon. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. DASHING WINNER began very awkwardly and got its head up, in the early stages proved very difficult to settle and got its head up on a number of occasions. After having missed the start, GOLCONDA was ridden along to go forward, for some distance after the 1400 Metres proved very difficult to settle and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of BULLISH LUCK. In the early stages, FLORAL DYNAMITE and KIDDYLAND over-raced. In the early part of the Straight, BULLISH LUCK and AIN'T HERE were held up and unable to obtain clear running. Near the 300 Metres, BULLISH LUCK shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of SIROCCO. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in. They were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred about 50 Metres from the winning post which cast sufficient doubt on whether SUPER KID should be declared the winner of the race. They decided the matter should be resolved formally and openly at a protest/objection hearing (Rule 123). Following the conduct of this formal hearing, the Stewards on all the available evidence including the nose margin between the horses at the conclusion of the race were of the opinion that by shifting out at about the 50 Metres and bumping BULLISH LUCK, SUPER KID had caused interference to BULLISH LUCK. The Stewards formed the opinion that BULLISH LUCK would have finished ahead of SUPER KID had the interference which clearly took place not occurred. In sustaining the objection, the Stewards placed SUPER KID immediately behind BULLISH LUCK [Rule 101(2)]. Accordingly the amended placings became BULLISH LUCK 1st, SUPER KID 2nd, CLASSIC MASTER 3rd and AIN'T HERE 4th. During the course of the protest/objection hearing, Jockey Coetzee advised the Stewards he did not lodge an objection as he was aware the inquiry sign had been put up and the matter would therefore be looked at by the Stewards. At the conclusion of this hearing, F Coetzee was advised he has an obligation under the Rules to lodge a protest/objection should he feel an incident has occurred during the race which has affected the finishing position of his horse. Prior to weighed-in being semaphored, the Stewards also considered whether GOLCONDA had had an unfair start. It was established that as the gates opened GOLCONDA lunged forward, hit its head on the gates and then consequently lost a significant amount of ground. In the circumstances, the Stewards believed GOLCONDA had not had an unfair start. BULLISH LUCK and SUPER KID were sent for sampling.
