Racing Incident Report

DEEP PURPLE was slow to begin. In the early stages, FREEBIRD hung in, then making the first turn hung out. Making the turn near the 1400 Metres, DEEP PURPLE was awkwardly placed outside the heels of MILLENNIUM SPIRIT. FAT CHANCE, which was following, was steadied away from the heels of DEEP PURPLE. Near the 600 Metres, MILLENNIUM SPIRIT (D Dunn) was steadied off away from the heels of SUGAR AND SPICE when that horse was taken out slightly by EXPLOSIVE POWER. Shortly afterwards, MILLENNIUM SPIRIT shifted in across the running of ROMANTIC SYMPHONY, causing that horse to be steadied. D Dunn was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground in future. Prior to the 200 Metres, MILLENNIUM SPIRIT was steadied when momentarily crowded for room inside HOLY QUEST which was giving ground. Throughout the race, RISING WIN raced wide and without cover. Apprentice K T Yeung (SUGAR AND SPICE) explained racing down the Back Straight he was in an awkward position between the heels of HOLY QUEST and FREEBIRD which was hanging in. He said after the 600 Metres he was of the opinion FREEBIRD was going to shift in, he therefore elected to steady to come back behind that runner and immediately when he did this, EXPLOSIVE POWER which had been racing to his inside shifted to a one off position. He said at the same time MEMBERS GLORY and STRATEGIC SELECT improved around his outside which meant he was not able to shift to the outside of FREEBIRD. He said then in the early part of the Straight he was held up and unable to obtain clear running between FREEBIRD and EXPLOSIVE POWER and near the 200 Metres steadied his mount and shifted towards the outside of STRATEGIC SELECT to obtain clear running. He said SUGAR AND SPICE then closed the race off fairly. Apprentice Yeung was told in the circumstances he should have made a greater effort to consolidate his position towards the inside of FREEBIRD. RISING WIN was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of RISING WIN following the race failed to reveal any significant findings. FAT CHANCE and STRATEGIC SELECT were sent for sampling.
