Racing Incident Report

MAGNIFICENT was withdrawn on 12.2.04 on veterinary grounds ("tied up") and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter NEVER SO YOUNG. Before being allowed to race again, MAGNIFICENT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. BALL OF FIRE was slow to begin. On jumping, LUCKY VICTORIES and NEVER SO YOUNG were steadied when crowded for room between BEEP BEEP and CHING HOI BOY which on jumping shifted in. As a result of CHING HOI BOY making contact with NEVER SO YOUNG, that horse also became unbalanced. METRO FLYER was slow to begin. With the intention to be ridden at the back of the field today from a wide gate, MYSTIC SPIRITS was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position on the rail but at the rear. In the early stages, GALLANT HORSE proved very difficult to settle and on a number of occasions got its head up when close to the heels of BEEP BEEP. Near the 1100 Metres, LUCKY VICTORIES was momentarily steadied when crowded for room between BALL OF FIRE and NEVER SO YOUNG which was carried in slightly by CHING HOI BOY (B Doyle) which at that time shifted ground. B Doyle was advised to exercise more care. At the 900 Metres, BALL OF FIRE and NEVER SO YOUNG were crowded for room, bumped and steadied when tight inside CHING HOI BOY which shifted in when not properly clear. B Doyle was severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to make a greater effort to protect his fellow riders. Near the 300 Metres, BEEP BEEP, which was giving ground, became momentarily unbalanced when crowded for room between CHING HOI BOY and CLANG'S PRIDE which had its head on the side and shifted out slightly. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the prima facie view that incidents had occurred over about the final 200 Metres which cast sufficient doubt on whether CLANG'S PRIDE should be declared 3rd placegetter of the race. They decided the matter should be resolved formally and openly at a protest/objection hearing (Rule 123). Following the conduct of a formal hearing, the Stewards on all the available evidence were of the opinion that by shifting out near the 200 Metres and bumping CHING HOI BOY, then continually shifting out over the final 200 Metres and carrying CHING HOI BOY from the running to which it was rightfully entitled, CLANG'S PRIDE had caused interference to CHING HOI BOY. The Stewards, bearing in mind the head margin between the two horses in the finish, formed the opinion that CHING HOI BOY would have finished ahead of CLANG'S PRIDE had the interference which clearly took place not occurred. In sustaining the objection, the Stewards placed CLANG'S PRIDE immediately behind CHING HOI BOY [Rule 101(2)]. Accordingly the amended placings became 1st AHEAD A HEAD, 2nd TOUCH OF CLASS, 3rd CHING HOI BOY and 4th CLANG'S PRIDE. PRO JOY and NEVER SO YOUNG were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, PRO JOY and NEVER SO YOUNG, which both tailed out, were examined by the Veterinary Officer. He reported both horses to be displaying a heart irregularity. Before being allowed to race again, PRO JOY and NEVER SO YOUNG will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. BALL OF FIRE, AHEAD A HEAD and TOUCH OF CLASS were sent for sampling.
