Racing Incident Report

SUMMERLAND was slow to begin. On jumping, PERFECT PARTNER blundered, shifted in and bumped TIBER. Also on jumping AIN'T HERE got its head up. After the 1400 Metres, SUMMERLAND was steadied when crowded for room between THE ACHIEVER and PERFECT PARTNER which shifted in slightly. In the early stages, LITTLE ELEPHANT proved difficult to settle. Near the 1300 Metres, TIBER was momentarily steadied away from the heels of THE DUKE which shifted in when only just clear. After the 1200 Metres, AIN'T HERE, which was proving difficult to settle, was steadied away from the heels of BEETHOVEN which shifted in when not properly clear. Near the 800 Metres, TIBER was momentarily steadied away from the heels of PALETTE NATURAL. After the 800 Metres, THE ACHIEVER got its head up after being crowded for room by AIN'T HERE which itself got its head up and shifted out when close to the heels of BEETHOVEN. Making the Home Turn, THE ACHIEVER hung out. Over the concluding stages, TIBER hung out. C Soumillon (THE DUKE) said he had been instructed to go forward and lead if possible and as the horse is just one-paced, he should at the 600 Metres ride his horse along in the hope of establishing a break on the rest of the field. He said in the early stages he was able to ride the horse at a pace which suited him and at the 600 Metres he commenced to ride THE DUKE along in accordance with his instructions. S Dye (PALETTE NATURAL) said he had not been issued firm riding instructions. He said he anticipated riding the horse in a rearward position as usual and in his opinion horses racing close to the rail on today's track were at a advantage. He said PALETTE NATURAL began well, in the initial stages he did not ride it along, however, the horse was travelling about midfield. He said after the 1200 Metres he became aware LUCKY OWNERS was on the rail, TIBER was behind the lead and one off the rail and he was racing three wide without cover. He said the pace of the race in the early stages whilst solid was not in his opinion fast and he elected to allow PALETTE NATURAL to travel forward and shift across to race one off the fence in front of TIBER as in his opinion it was in the best interest of the horse to do so. He said once racing in that position, he was able to steady PALETTE NATURAL and it raced kindly underneath him. The explanation of S Dye was accepted. F Coetzee (LUCKY OWNERS) said it had been the intention to ride the horse in 2nd, 3rd or 4th position. He said he anticipated THE DUKE would lead in the race. He said when the gates opened LUCKY OWNERS failed to muster speed immediately, this allowed PLANET RULER to cross and race on the fence in front of him. He said after this happened he considered shifting to the outside of PLANET RULER, however, in his opinion LUCKY OWNERS was not travelling well enough and to improve to be outside that horse would have required him to ride LUCKY OWNERS along. He said previously Mr A S Cruz, the trainer of LUCKY OWNERS, had been critical of him having made use of horses in similar circumstances. He said passing the 1200 Metres THE DUKE crossed to the lead and PLANET RULER held its position inside TIBER, however, as a result of what happened in the initial stages of the race, he raced one position further back than he would have liked. F Coetzee was told his explanations would be recorded. BEETHOVEN was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of BEETHOVEN after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, KINGFIELD was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, KINGFIELD will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. TIBER and LUCKY OWNERS were sent for sampling.
