Racing Incident Report
HARVEST was withdrawn on raceday morning on veterinary grounds (infected left front leg). Before being allowed to race again, HARVEST will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. NEW FACE began awkwardly and blundered. HAPPY TOGETHER and AFRICAN FOREST were slow to begin. In the early stages, ALL THE BEST proved difficult to settle and then after the 700 Metres commenced to hang out. Near the 1200 Metres, AFRICAN FOREST got its head up and shifted out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of STRONGHEART which shifted in when barely clear. Near the 200 Metres, SMART CHAMPION, which was giving ground, was steadied to avoid the heels of DOUBLE HAPPINESS (C Williams) which shifted to the outside of SHINING DRAGON when not properly clear. C Williams was severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he must exercise more care. When SMART CHAMPION was steadied, SUPER FANTASY, which was racing to its outside, shifted away from that horse and inconvenienced NEW FACE. Throughout the race, STRONGHEART raced wide and without cover. For the major part of the race, AFRICAN FOREST hung out. W M Lai (OPERA MAGIC) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse with cover and it was anticipated he would be in about midfield. He said from a wide gate he did not ride OPERA MAGIC along in the early stages and then shifted across behind runners to ensure he obtained cover, however, as a result he was further back than was intended. SMART CHAMPION was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, SMART CHAMPION was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said the horse, which weakened badly in the Straight, was found to be mildly distressed and displaying a probable breathing obstruction. Before being allowed to race again, SMART CHAMPION will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. HAPPY TOGETHER, DOUBLE HAPPINESS and SHINING DRAGON were sent for sampling. After the race, A Marcus advised in his opinion STRONGHEART did not "feel right". The Veterinary Officer examined the horse and said it had been galloped on the right hind leg. Before being allowed to race again, STRONGHEART will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
