Racing Incident Report

Trainer D E Ferraris was today fined $3,000 for incorrectly declaring A Delpech as the rider of QUICK NEWS when A Marcus had been engaged [Rule 82(4)]. Prior to the running of Race 1, it was noted KING OF SPADES had kicked out in its holding stall and made contact with the water trough. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said it had sustained a laceration to the left hind cannon and in his opinion was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of the horse. Before being allowed to race again, KING OF SPADES will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. MYSTIC FORCE began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall, then in the early stages raced greenly and was reluctant to hold its position. DOLBRIDGE and DANDY BUNNY were slow to begin. At the 600 Metres, X-SPEED was bumped by SMART WIN which got its head on the side and shifted in. After the 600 Metres, DANDY BUNNY was hampered and carried wider by GREAT IDEA which shifted to the outside of QUICK NEWS. After the 200 Metres, X-SPEED, which was improving into a run between CHARIOT OF WEI HAI and AMBITIOUS LEADER, got its head on the side, shifted in away from AMBITIOUS LEADER and made contact with CHARIOT OF WEI HAI which was giving ground. R Fradd (GREAT IDEA), which was having its first start today over 1650 Metres, said it was intended to be ridden quietly as it had been in a recent barrier trial in the hope it would be able to finish the race off. He said GREAT IDEA travelled comfortably until after the 1000 Metres, however, at that stage appeared to drop the bit, he therefore near the 800 Metres shifted it out in an attempt to follow ELITE WIN forward, however, the horse did not respond to his riding and was not able to do so. He said after the 600 Metres he shifted GREAT IDEA wider to see if it would pick up when racing in the clear, however, the horse at no stage responded to his riding and was most disappointing. The explanation submitted by R Fradd was accepted. GREAT IDEA was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, GREAT IDEA was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. G Schofield (AHEAD A HEAD), which was having its first start in over 5 weeks, explained he had been told by the trainer that he thought the horse would lead as it most probably would race "fresh". He said AHEAD A HEAD began well, however, CHARIOT OF WEI HAI and SMART WIN immediately went forward of him and shifted towards the fence, so he maintained the position one off the rail behind SMART WIN, then near the 1300 Metres in his opinion the leaders steadied the pace, he shifted out to a three wide position to give himself room from the heels of SMART WIN. He said when he did this, SMART WIN continued come back on his inside and QUICK NEWS had established running also to his inside which meant he was not able to shift back into a two wide position, therefore when AHEAD A HEAD got its head up and raced ungenerously, he elected to allow it to stride forward and join the lead. He said AHEAD A HEAD travelled comfortably in this position until after the 600 Metres when it commenced to hang out, then in the Straight gave ground. The explanation tendered by G Schofield was accepted. AHEAD A HEAD was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of AHEAD A HEAD after the race did not show any significant findings. AMBITIOUS LEADER and X-SPEED were sent for sampling.
