Racing Incident Report

While parading behind the barriers, FUJI SUNRISE was kicked in the region of the girth by another runner. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. ALAKAZAM, which was leaning against the side of its stall, was slow to begin. On jumping, THE RICH MAN got its head up, shifted in abruptly and made contact with JOIN VICTORY. When THE RICH MAN got its head up, it struck S K Sit, its rider, in the face. This caused S K Sit to become unbalanced and lose his right stirrup for a short distance. When the gates opened, COUNTRY DRAGON bounded in the air and on landing knuckled. Also when the gates opened, CYBER GULCH planted, refused to jump and took no part in the race. Before being permitted to race again, CYBER GULCH will have to perform satisfactorily in two consecutive official barrier trials. TAIJI SPIRIT was a little slow to begin. Near the 1200 Metres, TAIJI SPIRIT, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of HARRY HARRY. Near the 700 Metres as the pace steadied, ALAKAZAM was checked to avoid the heels of COUNTRY DRAGON which in turn steadied away from the heels of TELECOM TYCOON which itself steadied away from the heels of GOLD DIGGER. Near the 100 Metres, TELECOM TYCOON was momentarily awkwardly positioned between DR WELL and JOIN VICTORY which shifted in slightly. After the 100 Metres, HARRY HARRY was momentarily steadied when awkwardly placed outside the heels of SUNNY DESERT. Throughout the race, CHECK MATE raced wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground. D Whyte (CHECK MATE) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in midfield or behind. He said after beginning fairly from a gate towards the outside, he followed SUNNY DESERT across to race outside HARRY HARRY in an anticipation that SUNNY DESERT would continue forward to race on the rail behind TELECOM TYCOON. However, because SUNNY DESERT did not press on and remained racing one off the fence outside COUNTRY DRAGON, D Whyte said he was obliged to race three wide. He said after the 1400 Metres he looked to his inside on several occasions to see if he was able to find a position with cover behind SUNNY DESERT, however, HARRY HARRY occupied that position, therefore he elected to remain racing three wide without cover as in his opinion if he rode along in an attempt to clear SUNNY DESERT, that horse would continue forward underneath him and it would not have been beneficial to the chances of CHECK MATE. He said in the Straight CHECK MATE appeared a little awkward in its action and did not respond to his riding and was overall most disappointing. The explanation of D Whyte was accepted. CHECK MATE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of CHECK MATE after the race did not show any significant findings. JOIN VICTORY and DR WELL were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported JOIN VICTORY was distressed.
