Racing Incident Report

RISING WIN began awkwardly, shifted out and was checked away from the heels of NOBLE ZOOM which on jumping shifted in. HENNESSY DAYS began very awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of REWARD. On jumping, CUPID and JOY AND TREASURE bumped. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, ELFHELM became unbalanced and was checked when momentarily crowded for room inside PHOENIX FORTUNE (D Whyte) which initially shifted in slightly, then was unable to despite the efforts of its rider shift out to relieve the pressure because of NOBLE ZOOM racing tight on its outside. In the circumstances, it was considered inappropriate to take any action, however, D Whyte was advised to exercise more care. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, RISING WIN was crowded for room between ELFHELM and CUPID. After this, RISING WIN raced ungenerously for some distance. Shortly after straightening, BEST FOR ALL was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of GOLD SANDFIELD which at this time shifted in slightly. For a considerable distance after this, BEST FOR ALL had difficulty obtaining clear running inside GOLD SANDFIELD and outside REWARD which at this time was giving ground. For a short distance near the 200 Metres, running opened up between these two horses, however, near the 50 Metres BEST FOR ALL was again steadied when disappointed for running between GOLD SANDFIELD and REWARD which at this time shifted out when giving ground. At the 250 Metres, JOY AND TREASURE had difficulty obtaining clear running outside BEST FOR ALL and inside NOBLE ZOOM. At the 200 Metres, PHOENIX FORTUNE was steadied and shifted to the outside of THE ONLY ONE to obtain clear running. K S Yu (GOLD SANDFIELD) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in 4th or 5th position if possible and obtain cover. He pointed out GOLD SANDFIELD was today having its first race start at Happy Valley. He said it was anticipated there would not be a lot of speed in the race and from the outside barrier it was therefore decided to ride the horse more forward than is usual. He said after beginning well he rode GOLD SANDFIELD along and was initially racing towards the outside of REWARD which he anticipated would go forward to race with the lead, he therefore elected to follow that runner across. He said approaching the winning post on the first occasion he looked to his inside to see if he was able to shift in to obtain cover and race behind REWARD. He said at this time GOLD SANDFIELD was travelling keenly for him, however, he managed to come back to allow REWARD to be clear of him. He said when he did this, GOLD SANDFIELD initially obtained cover, however, at the 1200 Metres became unbalanced and shifted back out into a four wide position to be without cover, then shortly afterwards was carried wider by NOBLE ZOOM which shifted out when racing to his inside. He said entering the Back Straight GOLD SANDFIELD continued to race four wide and without cover, he therefore after the 800 Metres elected to allow the horse to travel forward of NOBLE ZOOM and shift across to race three wide outside the leaders but still without cover. He said in the Straight GOLD SANDFIELD gave ground from the 200 Metres. Mr C H Yip, the trainer of GOLD SANDFIELD, confirmed the riding instructions given to K S Yu and the reasons behind those instructions. K S Yu was told the Stewards would report the explanation of his ride, however, in their opinion his riding in early stages lacked initiative. GOLD SANDFIELD was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, GOLD SANDFIELD was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, GOLD SANDFIELD will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. PHOENIX FORTUNE and THE ONLY ONE were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported that RISING WIN had lost its right front plate.
