Racing Incident Report

LUCKY BIRD and KASHMAC were slow to begin. When the gates opened, WAIALAE WIN bounded in the air. At the 1200 Metres, FABULOUS was inconvenienced and carried wider by PLEASURE PLEASURE. On straightening, LUCKY ENCOUNTER was bumped by X-SPEED. Shortly after straightening, X-SPEED was momentarily steadied away from the heels of SWEETIE which shifted out to improve. Near the 100 Metres, X-SPEED hung in and was steadied away from the heels of FOOD LOVER which was giving ground. S Dye (FOOD LOVER) said before the race it was anticipated the horse would be ridden midfield. He said in the early stages he did not ride FOOD LOVER along in an attempt to obtain a midfield position, however, at about the 1500 Metres it became apparent to him that runners to his inside were not pressing forward and as a result he decided to go forward in what he anticipated would be a slowly run race and raced outside the lead. He said he did this to avoid being caught wide. He did point out FOOD LOVER was racing in a blinker with one cowl only for the first time tonight. The explanation submitted by S Dye was accepted. When questioned, P Payne (SILLY BOY), which was to be ridden in a rearward position tonight, explained after being boxed the horse became fractious and reared. He said SILLY BOY was being assisted by a barrier attendant in the stalls, when the horse reared the right rein looped through the horse's mouth and around the bottom of its jaw. He said shortly afterwards the field was released and as such he had very limited control of SILLY BOY. He said he managed to keep SILLY BOY racing reasonably until the 600 Metre turn when the horse commenced to run off. He said because he did not have proper control of the horse, he was not able to prevent it from shifting wider. The explanation submitted by P Payne was accepted. S K Sit (PLEASURE PLEASURE) said he had been instructed to ride the horse midfield or worse with cover. He said from the inside gate PLEASURE PLEASURE began well, he immediately restrained his mount in an attempt to obtain cover as instructed. He said PLEASURE PLEASURE proved difficult to settle in the early stages and after passing the winning post on the first occasion got its head on the side, shifted out and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of WAIALAE WIN. He said PLEASURE PLEASURE continued to get its head on the side and shifted further out into a four wide position. He said when this happened, he was not able to have the horse come back in behind LUCKY ENCOUNTER with cover and when racing without cover PLEASURE PLEASURE proved very difficult to settle, continued to hang out and strode into a forward position. He said along the Back Straight PLEASURE PLEASURE raced well away from runners to its inside, however, despite his efforts he was not able to have the horse shift back to race beside LUCKY ENCOUNTER. Having considered the racing manners tonight, the Stewards decided the horse must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial around a bend before being permitted to race again. SILLY BOY and PLEASURE PLEASURE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SILLY BOY and PLEASURE PLEASURE after the race did not show any significant findings. SWEETIE and LA MERVEILLE were sent for sampling.
