Racing Incident Report
After arriving at the Start, FLYING PROFILE had an adjustment made to its left front plate. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. FLYING PROFILE and NATURAL ECHO were slow to begin. THUNDER MAN began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped SUPERB which afterwards was steadied and shifted across behind runners. JUSTINIAN began awkwardly, shifted out, bumped FAIRPLAY and as a consequence lost ground. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, NATURAL ECHO became unbalanced when being steadied while momentarily crowded for room inside WAFER KING which at this time got its head on the side and shifted ground. Also approaching the winning post on the first occasion, QUALITY-QUALITY, which had been intended to be ridden with cover, proved difficult to settle, got its head up and hung in. For some distance after this, QUALITY-QUALITY continued to prove difficult to settle. Near the 1300 Metres, JUSTINIAN got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of RIGHT CHOICE. Passing the 1200 Metres, SUPERB got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of JUSTINIAN. Making the turn after the 1200 Metres, FREEBIRD hung out badly and shifted wider on the track, causing FAIRPLAY and FLYING PROFILE which were racing without cover to be carried wider. FREEBIRD continued to race ungenerously for the remainder of the race and in the Straight hung in and proved difficult to ride out. Over the final 200 Metres, SUPERB hung in and because of this B Prebble changed the whip into his right hand. When questioned regarding his riding making the turn at the 1000 Metres, F Coetzee (FANTASTIC WIN) said the horse which usually races further back in the field travelled keenly after the 1200 Metres when GOOD TRIO was being restrained in front of him to allow FREEBIRD to lead. He said making the turn at the 1000 Metres he was tightened for room inside RIGHT CHOICE, causing him to steady his mount. He said after this FANTASTIC WIN relaxed and travelled more comfortably for him and he was therefore reluctant after entering the Back Straight to again ride along to re-establish his running on the inside of RIGHT CHOICE. He said this allowed RIGHT CHOICE to cross in front of him onto the fence near the 900 Metres. F Coetzee was told where circumstances permit he is to do his utmost to hold his position in running. WAFER KING was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, WAFER KING, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had a displacement of the soft palate and also mucus in the trachea. RIGHT CHOICE and FREEBIRD were sent for sampling.
