Racing Incident Report

Prior to being taken to the saddling stalls, MELOS had its left front plate reset. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said it was suitable to race. HIGHLAND DAWN was a little slow to begin and shortly afterwards was inconvenienced inside ATHLETIC GOLD which shifted in. SAND DANCE began awkwardly. MASTER YING was a little slow to begin. MILLION CHASE began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped HAPPY TOGETHER. MELOS began awkwardly and bumped the outside gate of its stall. E Saint-Martin reported when this occurred his left foot shifted in the stirrup. Near the 1100 Metres, he reached down to correct this and when doing so MELOS shifted in. Making the turn near the 1000 Metres, LUCKY TRIO was checked severely when crowded for room between MELOS which at this time was being shifted out to relieve the crowding on its inside and HONOURABLE which despite the efforts of its rider got its head on the side and shifted in away from SAND DANCE. ATHLETIC GOLD, MASTER YING, GOLDEN GALLOPER and HAPPY TOGETHER which were following were inconvenienced in consequence. Although the check to LUCKY TRIO was one of significance, the Stewards did not believe in the circumstances any rider could be held responsible, therefore no action was taken. After being checked near the 1000 Metres, LUCKY TRIO hung out. For some distance approaching the 600 Metres, MASTER YING and MELOS raced tight inside SAND DANCE. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, MELOS lost its position when crowded for room inside MASTER YING which became unbalanced and shifted in after coming together with SAND DANCE (D Whyte) which shifted in slightly. ASIA RISING, which was following MELOS, was checked to avoid the heels of that horse. After this, ASIA RISING got its head up and raced ungenerously for a considerable distance outside the heels of MELOS and shifted ground near the 400 Metres, resulting in ATHLETIC GOLD being checked. D Whyte was advised to ensure he left comfortable racing room for runners to his inside. Near the 250 Metres, ATHLETIC GOLD was steadied when momentarily crowded for room between MILLION CHASE and ASIA RISING which shifted towards the outside of SAND DANCE. Near the 200 Metres, HAPPY TOGETHER and GOLDEN GALLOPER bumped. Over the concluding stages, HONOURABLE hung in. In the Straight, MELOS was eased out of the race. MELOS was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported MELOS had bled from both nostrils. Throughout the race, MILLION CHASE raced wide and without cover. C Williams (EVEREST), which was racing first up from a let-up tonight, said the horse previously trialed well but failed to re-produce that form in races. He said because of this Mr C Fownes, the trainer of the horse, did not barrier trial EVEREST in the lead up to tonight's race in the hope that it would perform in the manner in which it usually trials. He said he was instructed to jump the horse out, be positive from a good barrier in the early stages and hopefully obtain a position of about 5th or 6th in the run. He said on jumping he pushed EVEREST to go forward, the horse travelled easily into the lead and he therefore allowed it to continue on. He said EVEREST continued to travel well in the run, quickened nicely on straightening and just failed to hold on. He said whilst EVEREST was ridden in the lead tonight, that was not the intention but rather the circumstances of the race. Mr C Fownes, trainer of EVEREST, confirmed the riding instructions issued and said he had kept EVEREST fresh leading into tonight's race first up. SAND DANCE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SAND DANCE after the race did not show any significant findings. MASTER YING, HIGHLAND DAWN and EVEREST were sent for sampling.
