Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, BROWN BEAUTY stood flat-footed and was slow to begin. KING OF SPADES was slow to begin. Near the 1000 Metres, CLASSIC KING when being steadied away from the heels of RISING WIN shifted out, hampering BROWN BEAUTY and carrying that horse wider. Near the 600 Metres, BROWN BEAUTY was carried wider by RISING WIN. Prior to straightening, E Saint-Martin (MAMOUSKA) was struck in the face by a running rail cover which became dislodged as a result of FOREVER WIN bumping the rail. Over the concluding stages, KING OF SPADES, which was inclined to lay in, was steadied and shifted to the outside of the heels of RISING WIN. When questioned regarding the improved performance of FOREVER WIN, Trainer S Woods explained the horse was only having its second start for his stable tonight. He said when the horse joined his stable it was somewhat nervous and he had noted it had been made use of in its races to obtain a forward position. He said because of this he removed the blinkers from FOREVER WIN and endeavoured to get the horse to relax in its work. He said the horse has continually improved since joining his stable and tonight was able to travel comfortably behind the leaders without having to be ridden along. He said in his opinion FOREVER WIN was also suited by the increase in distance of tonight's race. S Dye (EASY GAME) explained in his opinion the track tonight was suiting horses ridden in a forward position and on the rail. He said because of this it had been decided to ride EASY GAME further forward than is usual. He said in the early stages he made some use of EASY GAME to obtain a position around midfield, however, the horse shortly after the start commenced to hang out and continued to do so for the majority of the race. He said because of EASY GAME hanging out, he after passing the winning post on the first occasion checked to avoid the heels of BARRACUDA which at this time shifted in. He said after this he was again crowded for room inside BARRACUDA near the 1300 Metres and because of the manner in which EASY GAME was racing it became badly unbalanced. He added making the turn at the 600 Metres EASY GAME again shifted out when hanging and at this time was checked to avoid the heels of BARRACUDA. He concluded by saying at no stage of tonight's race did EASY GAME travel as he had hoped and in his opinion this was because of the horse not handling the track conditions. He did say EASY GAME did not close the race off as it normally does and this could in part be due to the horse having more use made of it in the early stages than is usual. EASY GAME was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of EASY GAME after the race did not show any significant findings. When questioned regarding the poor performance of CLASSIC KING, Mr C S Shum, trainer of the horse, said after it was successful at its most recent start the horse when doing track work on the Large All Weather Track on 8 February 2005 dislodged its rider and whilst it did not escape spun around. He said after this CLASSIC KING which has a history of soundness problems showed signs of soreness in its right front leg. He said because of this he did not work CLASSIC KING for some period of time to ensure the horse which was under veterinary supervision properly recuperated. He said because of its lack of work CLASSIC KING had gained body weight. Mr Shum said CLASSIC KING in the past had shown itself to be unreliable and on occasions had disappointed him by not racing as he thought it would. He said tonight CLASSIC KING which was having its first start at Happy Valley was not suited by the pattern of racing and also Apprentice M W Leung who rode the horse reported to him following the race that it was unbalanced throughout. Mr Shum was advised where possible he must do his utmost to ensure horses trained by him race in a consistent manner. CLASSIC KING was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of CLASSIC KING after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of CLASSIC KING, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, CLASSIC KING will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. FOREVER WIN and MR BEAUTIFUL were sent for sampling.
